SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The Admiral showed he still has a lot left in
his tank.
David Robinson had 29 points and 22 rebounds, both season highs,
as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Detroit Pistons 108-101 on
Saturday night.
Robinson had 19 points and 15 rebounds in the first half to help
the Spurs take a 56-41 lead. San Antonio improved its NBA-best home
record to 15-2.
"David was as dominating a he's been all year tonight," San
Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "He took control early and set
the tone for the whole game."
Jerry Stackhouse, coming off a career-high 46-point performance
Thursday night in Houston, led Detroit with 34 points.
It was the 12th time that Robinson has 20 points and 20 rebounds
in his career, and the first time since January of 1996.
"David had a terrific game," Pistons coach George Irvine said.
"We played him straight up and no one could stop him."
Detroit closed to 63-56 on Joe Smith's jumper, but the Spurs
scored seven straight points in a 28-second span to make it 70-56
with 4:08 left in the third quarter.
Anderson started the spurt with a 3-pointer, Robinson made two
free throws, and Antonio Daniels capped the run with a dunk.
Detroit closed to within 92-83 in the fourth quarter, but
Robinson and Tim Duncan scored four points each to help San Antonio
increase its lead to 100-85 with 3:06 to play in the game.
"There's a reason David Robinson is one of the greatest players
of all time and he showed it out there tonight," Irvine said.
Robinson wowed the crowd at one point in the fourth quarter,
using a crossover dribble to free himself up for a dunk.
"David Robinson was amazing tonight," Daniels said. "He
got us off to a great start right off the bat. He did some things
tonight, like the crossovers, that I'd never seen him do before."
It was only the sixth time this season Robinson led the team in
points.
"Our spacing on the floor was excellent and we moved the ball
around very well," Robinson said. "That made things easy for Tim
and I inside and we were able to take advantage of the height
advantage we had on Detroit."
Duncan added 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Spurs.
