As fill-in, Wright excels again

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

ATLANTA (AP) -- Lorenzen Wright talks all the time about getting more playing time.

He got his chance Tuesday night and made the most of it.

Wright, starting in place of the injured Alan Henderson, scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Tuesday night in helping the Atlanta Hawks to an 87-77 victory over the New York Knicks.

It was the fifth double-double this season for Wright, who got to start his fourth game when Henderson was placed on the injured list prior to the game with a strained left shoulder.

Wright, averaging 21.5 minutes, 10 points and 6.0 rebounds, played 39 minutes Tuesday night and shot 9-of-19 from the field.

"When I get the opportunity, I want to show up," said Wright.

"I'm always talking about getting playing time. If I don't do anything about it when I do get the opportunity, all that talk is about nothing," said Wright, who also had a double-double on Saturday night in a 89-83 loss to New Jersey, when Henderson sat out that game, too.

"Whenever he's been given the minutes, he's produced. He's done it," said Hawks guard Jason Terry, who contributed 17 points and nine assists.

Matt Maloney added 15 points and Roshown McLeod had 12 for the Hawks. Dikembe Mutombo had nine points and 15 rebounds.

Glen Rice led New York with 23 points. Allan Houston added 18, including 16 in the second quarter for the Knicks, who have lost three of four. Marcus Camby had only four points but matched his season-high in rebounds with 17.

The Knicks led only one time, 2-0, on a basket by Luc Longley 37 seconds into the game. They lost for the second time this season to the Hawks and their fifth in a row overall in Atlanta.

"They've hung in there. They've had some good home wins," said Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy. "I give them a lot of credit."

The Hawks are only 7-18, but 5-7 at home.

"This is professional sports. Guys are good," said Houston. "You let guys get into a rhythm, they're gonna be good."

The Knicks, who fell behind by 11 in the second quarter, managed to get within 46-40 at the half. New York cut Atlanta's lead to 48-44 early in the third on a bucket by Rice, but never got any closer.

The Hawks then reeled off eight straight points on two consecutive 3s by Maloney and a basket by Wright for a 56-44 lead midway through the third.

Atlanta led 64-53 after three periods and padded it to 70-55 on a bucket by McLeod with 10:36 left and had its biggest lead -- 16 points -- at 82-66 on a 3-point basket by Maloney with 2:12 left.

Game notes
Houston played in his 255th consecutive game. ... The Knicks have held opponents under 100 points in 20 straight games and 24 of 26 this season. ... New York's Larry Johnson missed his third straight game due to a sprained right knee.
