ATLANTA (AP) -- Hard work is beginning to pay off for Jason
Terry.

Terry scored a career-high 38 points, including a 3-point basket
with 1:39 left to put Atlanta ahead to stay, and the Hawks held off
the Sacramento Kings 107-99 Tuesday night.
Terry went 12-for-19 from the field and 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. He also connected on two of four 3-pointers, the last one coming
after Doug Christie had given the Kings their last lead at 96-95.
Terry's 3-pointer with three seconds left on the shot clock put
Atlanta ahead to stay.
"I could have turned it over, but I shot it and it went in,"
Terry said of his timely 3-pointer.
"I've been working on my shot all season long and all summer,"
said Terry, the Hawks' second-year player out of Arizona whose
previous high was 32 points in a defeat to Cleveland on Saturday
night.
"Obviously, Jason is just on an unbelievable roll," said
Atlanta coach Lon Kruger, who switched Terry from point guard to
shooting guard nine games ago. The 6-foot-2 Terry, averaging just
more than 14 points, has averaged 23 in his last nine games.
"Terry was terrific," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said.
Atlanta, only 5-16, beat the Kings (14-5) for the 10th consecutive game and 12th in a row at home as Terry scored nine of Atlanta's
final 12 points.
Sacramento last beat Atlanta on Nov. 12, 1994, 105-97. The last
time the Kings won in Atlanta was Feb. 16, 1988.
Jim Jackson returned to the lineup after missing eight games
with a sprained right knee and added 20 points for the Hawks, who
had lost three in a row. Alan Henderson added 18 points and Dikembe
Mutombo had 17 rebounds and five blocked shots for Atlanta.
Chris Webber had 22 points and 13 rebounds for Sacramento, which
had won four in a row. Jason Williams was 5-for-8 from 3-point
range and finished with a season-high 21 points. Christie had 20
points and Vlade Divac 16.
"You can say that you'll have bad games throughout the year,
but this is not one of those games," said Webber. "You can't
blame it on that. They earned it. They worked hard."
After Christie's two free throws with 2:02 left gave Sacramento
a 96-95 lead, Terry hit his 3, then scored on a long jumper with
one minute to go for a 100-96 lead. He added two free throws with
35 seconds left for a 102-97 lead, and added two more free throws
with 12 seconds left for a 107-99 lead.
The Hawks, who led 50-49 at the half, took a 59-48 lead -- their
biggest -- with 9:34 left in the third period on a 3-point basket by
Jackson.
Sacramento went on a 15-3 run and regained the lead, 63-62, on a
basket by Divac and went ahead, 78-69, with 1:17 left in the period
on a basket by Christie and led 80-77 after three.
"We seemed like we had it going at that point, but they came
back at us in the fourth quarter," Adelman said. "Concentration.
It wasn't there tonight and we allowed them to get some really good
looks."
Terry had 12 of his 16 first-half points in the second period.
He was 4-for-4 from the field and line. Jackson added 11
first-half points.
Game notes
Atlanta forward Chris Crawford was placed on the injured list
Tuesday with a sprained left ankle and sore right big toe. Jackson
was activated to take his place on the roster. ... Kings forward Peja
Stojakovic, averaging 18.6 points, missed his third consecutive game
with a bruised right shoulder. ...Sacramento is 10-1 at home, 4-4
on the road.
