Odom limited by food poisoning

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Food poisoning sidelined Lamar Odom, and without him the Los Angeles Clippers couldn't stomach the Hornets.

David Wesley scored 20 points and all five of Charlotte's starters reached double figures in the Hornets' 92-87 victory over the Clippers on Friday night -- their sixth straight victory over Los Angeles.

Odom, the Clippers' leading scorer, played only six minutes because of food poisoning. He said he ate a plate of nachos late Thursday night, then woke up a few hours later vomiting and suffering from cold flashes.

"Something's got me right now, and it's got the best of me," he said.

Odom, averaging 16.7 points a game, started the game but didn't take a single shot before Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry took him out for good after six minutes. Odom watched the rest of the game from the end of the bench.

"Coach asked me if I thought I could go and I tried," he said. "But the lights hurt my eyes and I couldn't see myself sweating this one out."

Even without him the Clippers kept the game close and led 81-79 with 3:55 to play.

But that's when they missed him the most.

"It was an uphill battle the whole way without Lamar out there because he can do it all," guard Jeff McInnis said. "We really could have used him at the end."

Charlotte took control of the game with a 13-2 run over the next three minutes and without Odom, the Clippers didn't have anyone to match the Hornets' sudden scoring power.

"They definitely had us on the ropes," Wesley said. "But we bobbed and we weaved and we caught them with their guard down at the end."

Baron Davis scored on a driving layup to tie the game and Jamal Mashburn put the Hornets up for good on a 3-pointer that made it 84-81 with 2:56 to play.

Sean Rooks was fouled on Los Angeles' next possession, but only made one of his free throws.

Davis and Elden Campbell then each hit one free throw and Wesley scored seven straight points on a soft layup, two free throws and a 19-foot jumper as the shot clock expired to put Charlotte up 92-83 with 34 seconds to go.

"The Clippers keep coming at you, they're a good young ballclub," said Charlotte coach Paul Silas. "They hung around and gave themselves a chance to win."

Mashburn finished with 17 points and P.J. Brown had 16. Davis scored 14 on 6-for-9 shooting and Campbell finished with 13.

McInnis led Los Angeles with 21 points. Keyon Dooling and Corey Maggette each scored 14.

Game notes
Maggette took over for Odom and played 30 minutes. ... Charlotte forward Eddie Robinson missed the game because of a sprained right ankle suffered in a scrimmage Thursday. Robinson, expected to be one of the Hornets' top reserves this season, is averaging just 3.6 points and has seen his playing time dwindle. ... Davis failed to make a 3-pointer for the first time in five games.
