GAME FLOW
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The Sacramento Kings might have lost more than a game Wednesday night.
| | Tim Duncan scored 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Spurs. |
Chris Webber injured his right wrist and Jason Williams left the game with a sprained right ankle as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Kings 82-79.
Webber, who missed two games earlier this season with a sprained ankle, had X-rays taken of his wrist, which he hurt in the second quarter. The severity of the injury is unknown.
Williams, who left the game with a minute left in the third quarter, said his injury is not serious.
"I just went up and tried to challenge a shot or something and I came down and stepped on (Scot) Pollard's foot," said Williams, who had six points and four rebounds. "It will be all right."
Tim Duncan had 22 points and 13 rebounds and made two key plays in the final minute for the Spurs, who improved to 8-0 at home.
"We gave up a lot of offensive rebounds, but the defense was able to sustain it," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who is four wins from tying Doug Moe's team record of 177 career victories. "The guys hung tough with the defensive energy to win."
With the Spurs leading 76-75, Duncan made an 18-footer from the
top of the key over Webber with 46.7 seconds left. Duncan then came
up with a loose ball after Webber had it knocked away by David
Robinson on Sacramento's ensuing possession.
"On that last possession, we didn't run the play we wanted
to," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "That sometimes happens when
you have a lot of different guys on the court. We gave ourselves a
chance to win it in the fourth."
The Kings still had a chance to tie the game thanks to several
missed free throws by San Antonio, but Jon Barry's 30-footer was
hurried by Duncan and missed everything and the Spurs ran out the
clock. The Kings were 0-for-13 from 3-point range.
"We didn't make a 3-pointer and that's not like us," Webber
said. "We missed a lot of easy shots in general."
Sean Elliott added 15 points and Robinson had 10 points and 10
rebounds for the Spurs.
Webber led the Kings with 25 points and 17 rebounds. Bobby
Jackson had 13 points and six assists.
San Antonio seemed on the verge of blowing the game open at
several points in the second half, but the Kings stayed close.
Webber hit Jackson with a wraparound pass for an easy layup, then
nailed two straight 20-footers to erase a nine-point deficit and
pull the Kings to 70-69 with just under six minutes remaining.
The teams traded buckets until Jackson's drive gave the Kings
their first lead since midway through the second quarter, 73-72.
Sacramento led 75-74 with 2:47 remaining, but the Spurs
outscored the Kings 8-4 down the stretch.
Robinson was sent to the bench when he picked up his third and
fourth fouls in the opening three minutes of the second half. That
seemed to spark the Spurs, who took their largest lead of the game
52-41 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Derek Anderson.
San Antonio's lead grew to 13 points before the Kings used a 9-0
spurt to cut the deficit to 60-58.
Peja Stojakovic finished the run with an off-balance 22-footer
as the shot clock expired and a pair of free throws.
Robinson finished the first half 1-for-10 from the floor with
four misses coming within four feet. Plagued by poor shooting,
neither team led by more than four points in the first two
quarters.
Game notes San Antonio placed forward Samaki Walker on the injured
list with a sprained left ankle. The Spurs activated Shawnelle
Scott. ... Ranked 27th in scoring defense last season, Sacramento
entered Wednesday's game eighth at 90.2 per game. ... Webber and
Spurs point guard Avery Johnson were teammates at Golden State
during the 1993-94 season.
