SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- John Stockton tied John Havlicek's
single-team longevity record, then helped the Utah Jazz defeat the
New Jersey Nets.
Stockton had 10 points with 12 assists in his 1,270th game for
Utah as the Jazz beat the New Jersey Nets 97-85 Friday night.
With Karl Malone, Stockton and John Starks on the bench taking a
breather, the Jazz went on a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter.
Utah's 16-point third-quarter lead had been trimmed to 83-77
with 6:50 left in the game after Lucious Harris shot the Nets back
into the game. Harris scored eight straight points, including
back-to-back 3-pointers.
It was the closest the Nets had been since the opening minutes
of the game.
But Danny Manning responded by scoring six straight points to
open Utah's 10-0 run. Donyell Marshall scored on a layup and Greg
Ostertag followed with a dunk that completed Utah's run.
While Manning got hot, Utah held the Nets scoreless for nearly
five minutes. When New Jersey's Kenyon Martin finally hit one of
two free throws with 1:58 left in the game, it was too late.
"We just don't have enough offensively now to really get the
job done," said New Jersey coach Byron Scott. "I thought our guys
did a great job on the defensive end. Offensively, we just don't
have enough."
Malone returned to the lineup after serving a one-game
suspension to lead Utah with 20 points. Manning finished with 12
points off the bench.
"Danny looked terrific. We need everyone to come out every
night and if they do we can be a pretty decent team," Stockton
said.
Stephon Marbury
scored 21 points for the Nets and Kendall Gill added 19
points along with eight rebounds.
Utah opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 68-52 lead.
Stockton scored the first five points for the Jazz. Malone
scored then next four points as Utah opened up a 16-point lead with
7:39 left in the quarter.
But New Jersey charged back and cut the lead to 73-67 after Gill
scored eight points in a 2½-minute stretch.
