AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- So much for the homecourt advantage.
| | Elden Campbell goes to the basket against Jerry Stackhouse in the fourth quarter. Campbell had 19 points and 12 rebounds in Charlotte's win. |
Just 48 hours after blowing a fourth-quarter lead at home and
losing to Detroit, the Charlotte Hornets traveled to the Motor City
and the Pistons returned the favor.
Baron Davis set career bests of 25 points and 10 rebounds to
help the Hornets snap a five-game losing streak with a 105-96
victory over the Pistons on Sunday.
"Our players knew there was no excuse for losing that game on
Friday," said Hornets coach Paul Silas. "We had the game in hand,
and we just didn't come with the energy to put it away. That's why
tonight was a big win. We needed to get off this losing streak."
Davis also added eight assists, a career-best seven steals and
seven turnovers, a much better performance than his six points on
1-of-9 shooting in Friday's loss.
"We looked like a totally different ballclub than we did on
Friday night," Davis said. "I know I was upset with myself on
Friday night, and I knew I would play a lot harder tonight."
Elden Campbell had 19 points, including 11 in the fourth
quarter, and 12 rebounds, while Jamal Mashburn and David Wesley had
17 points each.
Jerry Stackhouse led Detroit with 22 points, and Billy Owens had
12 points and 10 rebounds.
"We just looked tired," Stackhouse said. "All night, we would
make a good pass, get a good look and the shot would come up just
short. On defense, we were always a step slow. We were giving the
effort, but didn't have the legs to get the results."
Charlotte took a 52-45 halftime lead behind 14 points from
Davis, then expanded the lead to 13 with an 8-0 run early in the
third.
"We had a 10-point lead in the first half Friday and just kinda
shut down," Wesley said. "Tonight, I knew we weren't going to do
that again."
The Hornets led by as many as 20 midway through the period, and
Detroit was only able to cut the lead to 80-65 by quarter's end.
Detroit closed to 85-73 with eight minutes left, but was done in
by a 55-second possession in which Charlotte got four offensive
rebounds before scoring.
"We let them score 30 points off our turnovers and 24 off
second shots," said Pistons coach George Irvine. "That's over
half of their points. We know how we need to play, so it confuses
me when we don't put forth that kind of effort. Maybe it is just
too much to ask."
Detroit's final rally was sparked by rookie Mateen Cleaves, who
had six points and an assist in a 10-point surge that made it
94-88 with 2:07 left.
"Our bench gave us a lift tonight, and it was our bench that
pulled it out Friday down there," Irvine said. "Maybe we need to
shake things up a bit."
David Wesley ended the run with two free throws, and Atkins
killed any chance of a comeback when he missed two from the line in
the last minutes.
Charlotte's P.J. Brown sprained his left ankle with three
minutes to play. His status is unknown.
Game notes
Hornets rookie Terrence Roberson, who grew up about 90
minutes north of the Palace, was in uniform for the first time in
his career but did not play. Roberson replaced Detroit native
Derrick Coleman on the Charlotte roster on Saturday. ... The game
was the second meeting between the teams in three days. Detroit won
96-89 in Charlotte on Friday.
