PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Eric Snow is making the most of his scoring
opportunities with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Snow scored a career-high 25 points as the 76ers beat the Boston
Celtics 85-83 Saturday night for their seventh consecutive victory.
"It's just simple basketball, taking good shots," said Snow,
who has registered career highs in two of his last three games.
"I'm just getting shots off the offense."
Philadelphia's 7-0 start matched the second-best start in the
team's history, tying the 1966-67 NBA Championship team. The Sixers
are one victory shy of the team record established by the 1979-80
team that reached the NBA Finals.
| | Allen Iverson had 17 points and seven assists Saturday night. | "We have 75 left, and I keep telling them if we get wins now
things won't be so critical later in the season, as it usually is
for us," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "I'm proud of the effort
and contributions we are getting from a lot of people."
Allen Iverson had 17 points, despite 6-of-21 shooting from the
field. Theo Ratliff had 15 points, George Lynch added 13 rebounds
and Tyrone Hill, who was 0-for-7 from the field, had 10 rebounds.
The Celtics, losers of four straight, were led by Paul Pierce's
26 points. Antoine Walker added 15 points and Vitaly Potapenko
finished with 12.
Boston struggled from the foul line, shooting 16-for-27 (59
percent).
The Celtics trailed 80-69 with 1:05 left in the fourth and
scored 14 of the last 19 points.
Pierce accounted for 12 of Boston's points in the run. His
3-pointer with 5.8 seconds left made the score 85-83. Pierce was
fouled on the shot and purposely missed the ensuing free throw and
got his own rebound in traffic.
Pierce missed the final shot in the lane, but the Celtics
thought he was fouled and coach Rick Pitino charged lead referee
Mike Mathis at midcourt after the buzzer.
"I was very disappointed in the whistle, Paul Pierce got
grabbed on the last play," said Pitino, who argued numerous times
with the officials. "There was too much inconsistency on the
calls."
Many of the Sixers were holding their breath down the stretch.
"They didn't quit and we gave them some opportunities in the
end," Snow said. "We just have to learn from games like that."
The 76ers trailed by as many as 11 in the third quarter and did
not take their first lead until the fourth quarter. The team shot
poorly, making 19-of-62 (31 percent) in the first three quarters.
But the Sixers went on a 12-0 run in the fourth period and took
a 74-64 lead with 4:42 left. Iverson had four points during the
run.
The Celtics held an 11-point lead in the third quarter and led
by nine points, 56-47, with 2:28 left in the period. But the Sixers
scored the last nine points of the quarter and tied the game at 56.
Boston had a nine-point lead six times in the first half, but
the Sixers scored six of the last nine to close to 40-35 at the
break. Philadelphia was 14-for-42 from the field in the half after
missing their first eight shots of the game.
Game
notes
The Celtics placed guard Randy Brown and forward Jerome
Moiso on the injured list and activated guard Chris Herren and
forward Walter McCarty. Brown has a groin strain and Moiso has a
right ankle sprain. Both Herren and McCarty began the season on the
team's injured list and both were in the lineup on Saturday with
Herren making his first career start. ... Boston's Adrian Griffin
was scratched from the lineup due to lower back spasms. ... The
seven wins to open the season is one shy of 76ers coach Larry
Brown's career-high, set in 1976-77 with the Denver Nuggets, who
went on to win the Midwest Division that season. ...Last year at
this stage of the season, Philadelphia was 3-4.
