Background: O'Brien was the head coach at his alma mater, Boston College, from 1986-97. Before landing on Pitino's staff at Kentucky O'Brien was the head coach at Dayton from 1989-94, leading the Flyers to the MCC Tournament Championship in his first year, and served on Pitino's staff with the NY Knicks from 1987-89.
