LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Ron Harper was trying to be diplomatic about the performance by his former team, the Los Angeles Clippers.

"It was kinda ugly," he said after the Clippers set an NBA record for fewest points in a second quarter, with three, and a half, with 19, in their 95-68 loss to the Lakers on Tuesday night.

Harper then shook his head and corrected himself: "It was very ugly."

The previous record for fewest points in a half since the 24-second shot clock went into effect was 20, by the New Orleans Jazz at Seattle on Jan. 4, 1975.

The previous lowest-scoring second quarter was five points, by both Utah in 1981 and the Knicks last season.

"I never lost this bad at any level of basketball," said the Clippers' Maurice Taylor, who went 1-for-7 from the field and scored just two points. "It's an embarrassment. We just played a horrible game in every respect and I played a big part in that."

Shaquille O'Neal had 21 points and 19 rebounds for the Lakers. Kobe Bryant added 18 points and Glen Rice had 17.

O'Neal, who has been playing all but a few minutes of most games recently, got a rare rest in the laugher, which the Lakers led 49-19 at halftime and 80-36 after three quarters.

Tyrone Nesby had 18 points and Michael Olowokandi had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Clippers.

In addition to the poor shooting by Taylor, Clippers rookie Lamar Odom was 0-for-4 from the field and finished with two points. Eric Piatkowski missed his first 10 shots, finally getting his first basket on a slam-dunk in the fourth quarter.

"The first half was probably the most embarrassed I've ever been, including everything outside of basketball," Piatkowski said.

Said Clippers coach Chris Ford: "We went against the best in the league and they put it to us."

The Clippers' three-point period just missed another league record; it was one more than the NBA low for any quarter, by Dallas in the third quarter of a game against the Lakers on April 6, 1997.

The Clippers made only seven of 38 shots from the floor and two of four from the free throw line in the first half.

Starting with the Lakers up 17-16 and 3:50 left in the first quarter, the Clippers went 7:22 without a single point and were outscored 20-0.

They made just one of 18 shots in the second quarter -- 5.6 percent.

The lopsided game was the first meeting between the Lakers and Clippers at Staples Center, the new arena they both call home.

The Clippers finished with 33 percent shooting from the floor, to 43 percent by the Lakers.

The Lakers have beaten the Clippers 10 in a row dating back to March 14, 1997.

Game notes
Bryant played his first game as a team owner. He has purchased a 50 percent share of Olimpia Milano, an Italian team that his father Joe played for. It is believed to be the first time an active NBA player has bought interest in any team. NBA rules prohibit players from owning any part of an NBA team. ... The game had the league's November player of the month, O'Neal, and rookie of the month, Odom, who shared the distinction with Boston's Adrian Griffin.
