Hornets send Warriors to 11th straight loss

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Being asked to take over games is still a relatively new concept for Eddie Jones, even though the results might not show it.

After four-plus seasons of playing mostly a supporting role for the Los Angeles Lakers, Jones is being asked to shoulder more of a scoring load with the Charlotte Hornets. Wednesday night was one of those games, with the Hornets playing without starting center Elden Campbell (flu) and guard Bobby Phills (sore hamstring).

"When we need production, Eddie's got to step up big for us," coach Paul Silas said after Jones had 30 points and 10 assists as Charlotte sent Golden State to its 11th consecutive loss, 113-106.

Jones scored 23 in the second half and powered a 22-6 run by Charlotte to close the third quarter.

Silas said he didn't have to say anything special before the game to Jones, who hit 10 of 18 field-goal attempts.

"I just let him play and call his number a little bit more," he said. "And he responded."

Jones, who came in leading the NBA with 2.94 steals per game, added four more to go with four rebounds and three blocks as the Hornets improved to 8-1 at home.

"I knew I was going to get an opportunity to get to the basket and create," Jones said. "Everything was just flowing."

Six Charlotte players scored in double figures. Derrick Coleman blocked seven shots to go with his 17 points.

Golden State's Antawn Jamison, making his first appearance in his hometown, had 26 points and 10 rebounds but missed a crucial dunk that ended a rally by the Warriors in the fourth quarter.

"It always feels good to see family and friends and to play in the place where I was raised," he said. "But we didn't get the win. It's very frustrating."

Golden State also got 28 points from John Starks, including 11-for-23 shooting from the field. His five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter tied a franchise record for one period. Third-year pro Adonal Foyle had a career-high 17 points, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Warriors from dropping their sixth in a row on the road.

"I was happy with our overall effort," coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We had a lot of good opportunities inside, but Derrick Coleman came up with some big blocks. We still came within a couple of big plays of tying it up."

A baseline jumper by Starks gave Golden State a 72-67 lead midway through the third quarter before Jones scored the Hornets' next 12 points, putting Charlotte up 79-74.

Jones finished off his 18-point third quarter by banking in a 21-foot fallaway jumper at the buzzer, giving the Hornets an 89-78 lead.

Golden State cut it to 93-88 but Jamison missed an uncontested dunk on a fast break that would have cut it to three with 8:51 left. Jones fed Baron Davis for a 3-pointer on the other end to push Charlotte's lead back to eight, and the Warriors were unable to get closer than five the rest of the way.

Foyle needed less than one half to match his career-high with 16 points, operating mainly against Todd Fuller and Brad Miller down low in the first two quarters. But Foyle picked up his fourth foul 34 seconds into the second half and went to the bench.

Game notes
Golden State guard Chris Mills sat out to rest a sprained left ankle. ... Charlotte closed the second quarter with a 10-2 run to wipe out the Warriors' bid for what would have been just their fourth halftime lead this season. ... Davis, the Hornets' first-round draft pick, made quite an entrance with 2:16 left in the first quarter. He had six points, three assists and a steal as Charlotte closed the period with a 12-3 surge. ... The Warriors' record for consecutive losses is 17 in the 1964-65 season.
