Sonics walk off with 'lucky' win over Warriors

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

SEATTLE (AP) -- Vin Baker and the Seattle SuperSonics learned a valuable lesson in their 111-108 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night.

"Defense wins games and we didn't play much of it," Baker said after the Sonics nearly squandered a late 12-point lead. "We're playing well offensively, but we're fortunate we won this game."

Baker scored 23 points, Gary Payton had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Ruben Patterson added 20 points and nine rebounds for the Sonics, who are off to a 7-2 start.

Antawn Jamison, a second-year player from North Carolina, matched his career high with 27 points for the Warriors. Mookie Blaylock had 15 points and 12 assists for Golden State.

"We got a lot of easy buckets out there," Blaylock said. "Seattle likes to run, but they don't like to get back."

Despite the win, Payton was disappointed by Seattle's performance. The Sonics committed two shot-clock violations in the final 90 seconds.

"This is just a lucky night and that's what I credit this win to -- luck," Payton said.

After Patterson's layup gave Seattle a 103-91 lead with 6:53 left, the Warriors outscored the Sonics 17-8 the rest of the way.

Horace Grant made two free throws to put Seattle up 111-106 with 37 seconds left.

A jumper by Terry Cummings cut the deficit to 111-108, and Baker's airball with 6.4 seconds left gave Golden State a final chance. But Blaylock's desperation heave from 30 feet hit the backboard and bounced away as time expired.

Baker's layup off a pass from Brent Barry put Seattle ahead 109-104, but Chris Mills' basket made it 109-106 with 57 seconds left.

Mills, Cummings and Adonal Foyle each had 16 points for Golden State.

Golden State's reserves outscored Seattle's bench 36-18, but reserve Chuck Person scored six key points for the Sonics early in the fourth quarter. Person, who was activated on Monday, hit a pair of 3-pointers to give Seattle a 99-87 lead with nine minutes left.

Barry sparked a Sonics' spurt late in the third quarter, scoring a basket off a pass from Payton and completing a three-point play for an 85-79 lead with 1:01 remaining in the period.

Jamison was kicked in the left shin during a scramble for a loose ball and limped to the bench with 6:51 left in the half. He scored just two points the rest of the half.

Mills scored eight points off the bench and propelled the Warriors to a 58-57 halftime lead. They led by as many as eight points, 50-42, with 6:20 left in the first half.
