Spurs claim 16th straight home win

SAN ANTONIO -- Tim Duncan hasn't played up to par. But it hasn't shown in San Antonio's record so far.

Duncan had 22 points and 12 rebounds as the Spurs beat the Charlotte Hornets 95-79 Saturday night for their 16th straight home victory.

Despite averaging 17.5 points a game, Duncan has only been shooting 38 percent from the field compared to 53 percent last season.

"I haven't had my best games yet," Duncan said. "I've been missing shots I usually hit and I haven't been making plays I usually do. It's just a matter of getting out on the floor and getting comfortable again."

The Spurs, whose winning streak extends back to last season, beat the Hornets at home for the first time since a 109-107 victory on Nov. 11, 1995.

David Robinson had 16 points and 11 rebounds in 30 minutes for the Spurs, who improved to 6-1 with the win. Avery Johnson had eight points and 12 assists, while reserve Malik Rose, who played his rookie season with the Hornets, scored 14 points in 16 minutes.

"Leaving Charlotte worked out for the best," Rose said. "I wasn't comfortable there and things weren't going as well as I wanted. I came to San Antonio and got a ring, so I'm happy."

Bobby Phills and Derrick Coleman each had 13 points for the Hornets. Elden Campbell had 12 rebounds with 10 points.

"We just didn't have it tonight," said Hornets coach Paul Silas. "It was a tough grind against a great team last year and potentially a great team this year. We were down nine with six minutes left to play and then we just missed shots that could have made the difference."

A thundering slam dunk by Duncan with 51 seconds left in the third quarter helped the Spurs open a 69-57 lead. Duncan, who has been in a shooting percentage slump at 38 percent for the season, was 8-for-17.

San Antonio led 47-42 at halftime.

Game notes
All of Charlotte's starters are averaging double-digits in points. ... Johnson and Phills played together at Southern University during the 1987-88 season. ... Hornets guard David Wesley was born in San Antonio, but attended high school at Longview, Texas. ... Spurs guard Mario Elie left the game with an injury to his right calf with 4:46 in the fourth quarter. He walked off the court under his own power, but did not return.
