Carter, McGrady team to beat Bulls

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

TORONTO (AP) -- The Toronto Raptors played down to the level of their opponent, winning an ugly one over the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night with a late 11-2 run.

Vince Carter had 26 points and Tracy McGrady tied his career-high with 15 rebounds as the Raptors beat Chicago 87-80.

Despite having the second-worst record in the NBA, the Bulls stayed with the Raptors throughout the game only to suffer their fifth straight loss.

"Sometimes you win ugly, but you have to know how to win those games," Carter said.

After Elton Brand, who had 26 points, made a jumper with 7:13 remaining, the Bulls failed to get a field goal for the next 5:39 as Raptors employed a trap.

"They threw that trap at us and took us out of our offense," Chicago's Randy Brown said. "We weren't tired at all -- it was the trap."

The Raptors went on their run as Antonio Davis made two free throws, Carter hit a jumper, McGrady hit a short jumper, Davis made a tip-in and Charles Oakley hit a wide open 18-footer for an 80-75 lead.

After Carter made two free throws, Brand made his free throws and ended the Bulls field goal drought with a short jumper with 1:16 remaining to make it 82-79.

"I think we had two travels and two 3-second calls, and that double team came hard," Brand said.

After three free throws by McGrady, Carter's emphatic dunk with 37 seconds remaining made it 87-80.

"The Bulls didn't handle our halfcourt trap that well and we were fortunate to get a win," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "I think the team knows they didn't play up to their ability."

The Raptors had 17 blocked shots, including a career-high seven for Doug Christie. Christie also had seven points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

McGrady added 13 points, five assists and 10 offensive rebounds. The 6-foot-8 swingman had eight rebounds in the third quarter, including five on one play.

After a miss by Carter, McGrady got the rebound, went up for a layup, missed, tipped the ball, tipped it again and then again, and once more before being fouled and making two free throws.

"I just go after balls," McGrady said. "I'm around guys who rebound and it's rubbing off on me."

Carter's high-flying finger role as time expired tied the game at 42 at the half. His 12 points at the half also included a reverse layup and a fadeaway jumper after a crossover.

Game notes
John Starks, who wants the Bulls to release him so he can sign with a playoff contender, missed his second straight game. The Bulls said he missed Sunday's game because of right knee tendinitis, then said he missed Tuesday's game because of left knee tendinitis. Starks is shooting 5-for-19 in three games with the Bulls. ... Asked who was going to guard Carter, Chicago coach Tim Floyd said Artest. "We called Marty McSorley, but he wasn't available." McSorley, a hockey player, was suspended for the rest of the season for hitting his stick against an opposing player's head. ... Dee Brown, Toronto's 3-point specialist, has replaced McGrady as the Raptors' sixth man. McGrady has started the last three games. Brown was activated off the injured list last Wednesday after missing more than a month with knee problems.
