Marshall's 21 rebounds boost Warriors

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Suddenly, Donyell Marshall is a force on the boards.

After grabbing 20-plus rebounds just once during his first 357 NBA games, Marshall has done it three times in his past four.

Marshall scored 23 points and pulled down 21 rebounds as the Golden State Warriors defeated the Atlanta Hawks 80-75 Monday night. He became the first Warriors player with consecutive games of at least 20 rebounds since Larry Smith in 1981.

"It's a combination of things, like working hard and taking advantage of being 6-9 at small forward," Marshall said. "Things are slowly starting to come into place."

Larry Hughes added 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Warriors snapped a two-game losing streak by winning their third straight at home. It was just the fifth time this season Golden State won when trailing after three quarters.

Isaiah Rider scored 24 points to lead the Hawks. Dikembe Mutombo added 13 points and 22 rebounds, the ninth time this season he's grabbed 20 or more rebounds. Jim Jackson had 21 points.

"Marshall has stepped up and is playing very well," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "Tonight we got up and then all of a sudden we didn't play well."

Hughes sealed the victory with a turnaround jumper off an offensive rebound as the 24-second clock was running out with 28 seconds to play.

Golden State took its first lead of the night with 8:44 remaining when Marshall scored from underneath. The Warriors eventually led by as many as nine points down the stretch. Marshall added a dunk over Mutombo during that period.

"Any time you can dunk on Mutombo you can chalk it up as a momentum changer," Hughes said.

Golden State coach Garry St. Jean said Marshall has taken the initiative and worked at rebounding.

"He's taken his game to another level," St. Jean said. "I very rarely have to say much to him. He's into the game and he's focused. He's come up big. Rebounding takes a lot of effort and hard work and he's stepped it up."

The Warriors outscored Atlanta 11-5 to open the third quarter to close to 46-44. Golden State stayed close, and when Hughes hit the Warriors' first 3-pointer of the night with 1:34 left in the period, they were within one at 59-58.

"Defensively we just didn't do a good job," Mutombo said. "We had a mental collapse. When we play a team that's not going anywhere, we just fall apart. We celebrated too early when the game wasn't over."

Atlanta never trailed in the first half, leading by as many as 14 points en route to a 41-33 lead at halftime.

The Warriors missed nine of their first 10 shots and found themselves in an early 13-2 hole as the Hawks ran off 11 unanswered points in the first 4:30.

Game notes
Jackson played in his 500th career game. ... Golden State's Billy Owens did not play in the second half due to a strained right knee. ... The 14 first-quarter points scored by the Warriors was their second lowest total of the season. ... Mutombo recorded his 33rd double-double of the season. ... The Hawks are 0-5 on Mondays.
