SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Frank Flynn hit a three-run homer and struck out nine Monday to lead Worcester, Mass. to a 6-0 victory over Fort Worth, Texas, that clinched the top seed from Pool A at the Little League World Series.
Worcester batted around and scored four runs in the third inning when Flynn hit his 260-foot home run -- the fence in left-center is 205 -- that made it 3-0.
``If they throw a fastball anywhere over the plate, I'm going to try to hit it somewhere where nobody's there,'' Flynn said. ``Fortunately, I hit it where no one was.''
Zack Ford's RBI single made it 4-0.
``We came back from 4-1 in the region, which is almost like 4-0. So if we start stringing hits together, we can come back,'' said Fort Worth manager Jon Kelly, whose team also advanced to the semifinals. ``But I didn't think we'd come back against that kid, Flynn. He's a good pitcher.''
In other games Monday, Willemstad, Curacao, Netherlands Antilles beat Moscow, Russia 13-0 in four innings; Sendai, Japan beat Monterrey, Mexico 11-0, also in four innings; Valencia, Venezuela beat Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada 9-3; and Waipahu, Hawaii beat Webb City, Mo. 2-1.
Both Worcester and Fort Worth finished with 2-1 records, but Worcester clinched the top seed in the pool with the win and by only allowing four runs in pool play.
Waipahu also finished 2-1, but Fort Worth won the tiebreaker for the second seed and a berth in the U.S. semifinal game Wednesday against Louisville, Ky.
Worcester added two runs in the fourth, the second on Keith Landers' RBI single.
``When Frank hit that home run, it was like a cloud was lifted and our bats just came alive,'' Worcester manager Fran Granger said.
Netherlands Antilles 13, Russia 0, 4 innings
Japan 11, Mexico 0, 4 innings
Venezuela 9, Canada 3
Hawaii 2, Missouri 1
For the second time at the Little League World Series, Travis Jones made a winner out of Hawaii by smacking a walk-off home run, giving the team from Waipahu a 2-1 victory over Webb City, Mo., on Monday.
Despite Jones' last-inning heroics, Hawaii was eliminated from advancing to the championship round hours earlier when Worcester, Mass., beat Fort Worth, Texas, 6-0.
Although Hawaii, Massachusetts and Texas all finished at 2-1 in pool play, Hawaii loses in all tiebreaking scenarios among the three. Missouri finished at 0-3.
Only the top two teams in each pool of four advances to play for the championship. In all, eight of the 16 teams here -- four U.S. and four international teams -- play for the championship.
