Felipe Alou's firing is a direct result of poor economic conditions and poor fan support. The Expos do a great job developing talent and Alou gets the most out of their young players. The problem is, Montreal won't support a franchise and players won't stay if you can't pay them. If Jeff Torborg can't get management to re-sign more of the team's key young players, he won't be there long. Matt Grimley Boston, Mass.
Alou suffered from low payroll It was a terrible decision to fire Alou. Over the years he has proven a master of cultivating young talent and has faired relatively well when considering his undersized bank roll. We wouldn't even be having this conversation if it wasn't for the baseball strike of '95. The Expos were on top of the National League. Never fails to put blame on coach Is Alou the reason for Montreal's problems? Of course not. Is this firing a wise move? I really don't think it matters. It's probably a relief for Alou to finally leave that sinking ship. In fact, when Montreal sells its team back to MLB at the end of the season, this move will actually benefit Alou, since he's now first in line for the next managerial opening. The only right thing to do While no one doubts Alou's managerial talent, the team he had didn't win...and when your team doesn't win, the manager is the first to get blamed and fired. Unfair, maybe. All Felipe did was his best I think it is a real shame! Alou is a great manager and loved his team. The Expos have little or no fan support and Felipe did the best he could with what he had. Not only that but he loves Montreal and turned down other managerial positions to stay there. He backed the Expos when no one else would. In my opinion, this gives him the opening for the next managerial position that opens up. I think this move is the beginning of the end for the expos! Reunion between father and son The job that Alou did with the Expos despite the numerous losses of his star players over the years was nothing short of exceptional. While Alou did not deserve to be fired, there will be no shortage of clubs who will pursue him this or next season and reward him for his talents. How about reuniting him with his son in Houston? Bring Alou to Boston Alou should have quit on his own a while ago. For Luria to do nothing to improve the team and then blame Alou for not winning is ridiculous. Look at the All-Star team of former Expos around the majors. Do you believe that Alou couldn't have managed them to a World Series or two? Stayed in Montreal for too long I think that it's a good thing to happen for Alou. He's been far to loyal to a city and organization that was not committed to its team. No fan support there and owners who were not willing to keep talented players. He should have left earlier. Gary Nix Acworth, Ga.
Alou deserves better I am really happy for Felipe. The Expos do not deserve to have him around. Here's a man who has given what he could to the organization and got a slap in the face for it. Alou will win with talent I think it was the best thing to do, let Alou show what a great manager he really is with some talent and manage the Red Sox. He has a great job in Montreal with little or no support, and letting all the All-Stars in the league go. Joe Nunes Chicago, Ill.
Wanted man in Texas It was a good move for Alou. The Expos have continued to show that they are unable and unwilling to pay to keep the players that Alou has consistently developed. He can now go to a team that will spend money on players. Let's see what he can do with a team that has some highly compensated talent.
