Smoky oven sends M's plane back to NYC airport
Associated Press
NEW YORK -- The Seattle Mariners' chartered plane was routed
back to New York early Wednesday when smoke from a faulty microwave
oven wafted into the passenger cabin.
None of the more than 100 people on board was injured.
The Mariners, whose season ended just a few hours earlier with a
9-7 loss to the New York Yankees in Game 6 of the AL Championship
Series, left Kennedy Airport about 4:15 a.m.
A few minutes into the West Coast flight, smoke began spewing
from a microwave in the galley of the Boeing 757, Port Authority of
New York and New Jersey spokesman Allen Morrison said. There was no
fire.
The pilot decided to return to Kennedy, landing about 4:50 a.m.
The plane carried 101 passengers -- the Mariners and their family
and friends -- and a crew of about seven. All boarded another plane.
The Mariners' flight finally arrived in Seattle at 2:30 p.m. About 50 Mariners fans greeted the plane.
