Left-hander Jimmy Anderson was called up from Louisville to start the first game of a series against the Chicago Cubs. Anderson went 1-2 with an 8.27 ERA in four starts and one relief appearance before he was demoted in April.
Lopez is expected to take over for Barry Larkin as the starting shortstop next year. Lopez got chances to play when Larkin went on the disabled list twice with leg injuries, but struggled with his fielding and hitting.
Lopez batted .213 in 59 games, including 42 starts at shortstop, three at second and two at third. He had a team-high 16 errors.
Lopez will play shortstop at Louisville.
Infante didn't swing at a pitch after being given a hit-and-run sign earlier in the at-bat, but Trammell said it was Infante's failure to run hard to first on the fly ball that prompted him to tell Infante he was out of the game. "There was a runner on second ... and I'm not saying you have to go 100 percent to first base," Trammell told reporters Sunday. "But you've at least got to get to the bag. It just looks bad." Outfielder Bobby Higginson told the Detroit Free Press that he wasn't surprised by Trammell's actions. He said Trammell had just warned players about things he didn't like -- like not running out balls -- in a meeting Friday. "When you have a record like ours (17-49), and it's been 2½ months now, you can't put up with that," Higginson told the newspaper. "You have to send a message -- if you're going to lose all these games, you're going to at least lose by hustling."
Neagle has not pitched in the majors this season after experiencing elbow soreness in spring training. He was 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA in four starts at Colorado Springs. The Rockies took their time with Neagle, who had a setback a little over a month ago, but feel he's ready to go. He will start Tuesday night against San Diego.
"We have had to make it a long time to get him ready to be safe and make sure he was ready and healthy,'' Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "We can bring a guy back that will help us on the front end of the game. He has been throwing pain-free the past couple of games out. He is ready to take it and will go tomorrow.'' Neagle's return comes at the expense of Cook, who has struggled after making the Rockies' rotation out of spring training.
Hill, a second-round draft pick in 2000, joined the team before the start of a four-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. He hit .255 in 64 games at Iowa, where he also started learning a new position.
The second baseman played two games and part of another at third base, an unfamiliar spot. He played 55 games at second base for the Cubs last year and another at shortstop, but had never played third.
"I haven't been on the other side of the diamond in I don't know how long -- since I played shortstop,'' Hill said. "It's different. It's more of a step-and-dive position.''
Beltran was called up from Iowa on Sunday, but he didn't appear
in a 5-4, 10-inning loss at Toronto.
The 6-foot-10 Anderson, the 19th player chosen in the draft, will have surgery for the third time on his left shoulder.
He had surgery for a torn labrum in 2002 and an operation for a torn rotator cuff in 2001.
Because of Anderson's height and the fact that he's left-handed with a fastball that once hit almost 100 mph, he was nicknamed "Little Unit'' and compared with the "Big Unit,'' former Mariners star left-hander Randy Johnson.
In the last season in which he pitched, he had a 5-8 record and a 3.98 ERA in 20 starts and 104 innings at Triple-A Tacoma, with 146 strikeouts.
In spring training, Anderson complained of more pain in his left shoulder. Mariners call up Soriano: In a move to give themselves 12 pitchers, the Mariners recalled right-hander Rafael Soriano from Triple-A Tacoma on Monday and optioned catcher Pat Borders to their Pacific Coast League farm club.
Soriano had a 4-3 record and a 3.19 ERA in 11 games, 10 of them starts, at Tacoma this season. In 62 innings, he struck out 63 and walked only 12. Opponents are hitting only .192 off him in 2003.
The Mariners decided they'd rather have an extra pitcher than an extra catcher. Borders had one hit in two at bats after being recalled from Tacoma when John Mabry was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Manager Bob Melvin said he planned to use Soriano in long relief and not as a starter.
The Giants were awaiting word Sunday from the commissioner's office on whether they can replace him for three to seven days under the new family emergency leave policy. "He has been having a tough time for a long time. She's been sick," manager Felipe Alou told reporters Sunday. Torrealba's wife has a "very serious bowel obstruction most likely caused by some type of tumor," Giants head trainer Stan Conte told the San Francisco Chronicle. "Obviously, the blockage has to be removed, which is a major surgery. The concern is the tumor may be cancerous. They won't know until after the operation." If the Giants are granted permission to replace Torrealba while he is in Venezuela, they likely will recall Trey Lunsford from Triple-A Fresno, the Chronicle reported.
Alomar, who turns 37 Wednesday, has been on the disabled list since May 31 with a strained right oblique muscle. He was batting .247 with one home run and eight RBI in 25 games with the White Sox. The Charlotte Knights open a four-game homestand Monday night against Ottawa. White Sox recall Harris: The White Sox recalled utilityman Willie Harris from an injury rehabilitation program on Monday, and placed reliever Kelly Wunsch on the disabled list because of a strained muscle in his side. Harris was placed on the disabled list May 23 following a mild separation of his right shoulder. He was injured while making a diving catch against Minnesota and was sent to Triple-A Charlotte on June 10. He hit .211 with one home run in five games at Charlotte. Harris hit .162 in 14 games with the White Sox earlier this year. Wunsch is 0-0 with a 1.15 ERA in 22 relief appearances.
Williams underwent surgery May 27 to repair torn cartilage in his left knee. He could rejoin the Yankees by the All-Star break. "It's coming around," Williams said. "I'm doing mostly strengthening work." First baseman-designated hitter Nick Johnson remains out with a stress fracture in his right hand. Johnson is in a cast and will have the hand re-examined Friday. Johnson said Monday that it's hard to tell how much the hand has improved because of the cast. Should he be cleared to increase his rehab, he could return next month.
Sources told the Daily that Citizens, already the team's official bank, will pay $57.5 million for the naming rights, with the remainder for TV and radio media, tickets and hospitality.
Terms were not disclosed. The Indians assigned him to the Lake County Captains. Aubrey, 21, the 11th pick overall in the draft, batted .420 with 18 homers and 79 RBI in 63 games this season as a junior. Aubrey, from Shreveport, La., bats and throws left-handed. He was the 2003 Conference-USA Player of the Year.
The Expos announced that the trophy will go to the winner of this season's six-game interleague series between the teams. If the teams split the series, the trophy will be shared. The Blue Jays travel to Olympic Stadium for a three-game series this weekend, and the Expos play a three-game series June 27-29 at the SkyDome.
The trophy was named for former Canadian prime minister Lester B. Pearson. Toronto adds Service: The Blue Jays claimed right-handed pitcher Scott Service off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks and sent right-hander Mike Smith to Triple-A Syracuse. Service, 36, went 0-2 with one save and a 4.91 ERA in 18 games this season for Arizona. He will join Toronto on Tuesday in Baltimore. Smith, 25, did not appear for the Blue Jays after his recall on June 12. He was 4-3 with a 4.83 ERA in 12 starts with Syracuse.
