Braves' Hampton day-to-day with injured groin

ESPN.com news services

New York Yankees: Yankees first baseman Nick Johnson, out with a stress fracture in his right hand, was scheduled to undergo a bone scan Thursday.

"It's to see how it's healing,'' Johnson said. "Hopefully it's improving and I can start moving it around.''

Johnson is still wearing a cast. The Yankees originally believed Johnson would be sidelined four-to-six weeks, but haven't ruled out a longer period.

"We should find out in a couple days,'' Johnson said.

Johnson is hitting .308 with five home runs and 18 RBI, and led the AL in walks with 33 at the time of his injury. He's made 23 starts at first base and 10 at designated hitter.

Johnson was hurt on a foul ball in the ninth inning May 14. He then grounded out, ending a loss to Anaheim.

Tests showed a stress fracture in the third metacarpal bone in his right hand and Johnson was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 17.

The 24-year-old Johnson has been slowed by hand and wrist injuries in recent years. He missed time in spring training because of a sprained left thumb and was on the disabled list last August with a sprained left wrist.

Detroit Tigers: First baseman Carlos Pena was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a strained left hamstring strain.

To take his roster spot, Detroit bought the contract of infielder Warren Morris from Triple-A Toledo. Third baseman Dean Palmer was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Pena has been out since leaving a game against Cleveland on May 27, with the exception of a pinch-hitting appearance Sunday against the Yankees. His move to the DL is retroactive to Monday.

In 49 games this season, he is hitting .235 with six home runs and 20 RBI.

Morris was hitting .278 with two home runs and 19 RBI for the Mud Hens in 55 games. He has played in the majors in each of the past four seasons with Pittsburgh and Minnesota.

Atlanta Braves: Left-hander Mike Hampton strained his groin against the Rangers and left Thursday's game in the second inning. The team listed him as day to day.

Hampton appeared to hurt himself while coming off the mound to field a sacrifice by Rangers pitcher Victor Santos. First baseman Robert Fick made the play, and Hampton left the game after working 1 2/3 innings.

Hampton started the season on the disabled list with a strained right calf. He was activated April 19 and entered Thursday with a 2-3 record and 4.18 ERA.

Cleveland Indians: Indians right-hander Jason Bere will have surgery on his ailing shoulder and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Bere was examined by team doctor Mark Schickendantz last week and tests found more fraying in his rotator cuff.

Bere went 1-10 with the Chicago Cubs last season before signing with Cleveland as a free agent. He missed the first six weeks of the season with shoulder problems and came out after one inning in his last start, May 27 against Detroit.

Bere pitched just 6 2/3 innings this season and has made nine trips to the disabled list in 11 seasons. He was 0-0 with a 4.05 ERA in two starts this year.

Bere is the second Cleveland pitcher in two days to be lost for the season.

Manager Eric Wedge said Wednesday that right-hander Mark Wohlers, the team's top setup man, will likely be out for the year after tests results showed ligament damage in his elbow.

Colorado Rockies: The Rockies sent left-hander Vic Darensbourg outright to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Thursday, clearing the way for right-hander Nelson Cruz to come off the disabled list on Friday.

Cruz has been on the disabled list since May 17 with shoulder inflammation. He started the season as a member of Colorado's rotation, but was shifted to the bullpen last month.

Cruz was 3-4 with a 6.92 ERA in nine appearances, including seven starts.

Darensbourg allowed one unearned run in 2 1/3 innings in three appearances after having his contract purchased from Triple-A Colorado Springs on May 23. He was taken off the 40-man roster, which means he can either accept the assignment or become a free agent.

By becoming a free agent, Darensbourg's $1.1 million contract would be voided.
