Garcia lands on 15-day DL with wrist injury

Associated Press

Cleveland Indians: The Indians got their hottest hitter back Thursday, but will be without their cleanup hitter.

The Indians activated Milton Bradley, who was batting .375 before a strained hamstring sent him to the disabled list.

Karim Garcia was put on the 15-day DL with a strained left wrist that has bothered him all season. It's his first trip to the DL since 1997. Garcia missed five games in April because of inflammation in the wrist. He hit .194 with five home runs and 14 RBI in 24 games.

Bradley originally strained his right hamstring running the bases on April 15 against Baltimore and re-aggravated the injury a week later in Seattle.

Batting leadoff, Bradley was 30-for-80 with 16 runs, 10 doubles, three home runs and seven RBI in 19 games.

Cincinnati Reds: Right-hander Jose Rijo has been slowed by a pulled hamstring during an extended spring training assignment in Florida, but the Reds expect him to resume throwing next week.

The Reds plan for Rijo to join Triple-A Louisville in two or three weeks to continue his comeback from a series of elbow operations.

Rijo, who turns 38 on May 13, had surgery to remove a bone chip from his elbow March 11. He stayed at the team's spring training complex when the team came north to open the season.

Rijo had his fastball above 90 mph early in spring training, before the bone chip started causing a lot of pain.

Montreal Expos: The team will distribute 5,000 bobbleheads of Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez, who played four seasons in Montreal, for its Sunday afternoon game against the Dodgers.

Martinez began his career as an Expo.

In celebration of the team's 35th season in Montreal, six Sunday bobblehead giveaways are scheduled this year, but second baseman Jose Vidro is the only current Expos player featured in the series. Other bobbleheads include manager Frank Robinson, former pitcher Dennis Martinez, former third baseman Tim Wallach and mascot Youppi.

New York Yankees: Shortstop Derek Jeter went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in the second game of his minor league rehabilitation stint with the Double-A Trenton Thunder.

Jeter, who dislocated his shoulder on Opening Day, is slated to play five games for the Thunder. He brought the sellout crowd to its feet when he flied out to the left-field wall in his third at-bat. He singled to drive in a run his final time up.

"I'm not really concerned with the results," Jeter said. "Obviously, I want to do good because I want to help the team win. But to me it's more of a feel, to make sure physically I'm fine. I feel good, so the results will come eventually after having more games."

Jeter was originally scheduled to play five innings against the Binghamton Mets, but that was changed to seven before the game. He was removed for a pinch-runner after his hit in the seventh.

  • Right-hander Rolando Arrojo, who's pitched for Tampa Bay and Boston, was signed to a minor league contract.

Arrojo, who could join Triple-A Columbus next week, has been working out with the Yankees' extended spring training team. He didn't allow a hit over two scoreless innings in an extended spring intrasquad game Wednesday.

The former Cuban national team standout went 4-3 with a 4.98 ERA in 29 games, including eight starts, for the Red Sox last season. He was signed as a free agent by Pittsburgh in January and released by the Pirates during spring training.

Seattle Mariners: Closer Kazuhiro Sasaki was activated from the 15-day DL, though manager Bob Melvin said it's likely the right-hander will throw first in a non-save situation to ease his way back.

"He's been inactive for two weeks with just one rehab appearance," Melvin said. "Closing can be a tough thing. We'll probably get him out one time to get his feet wet in a non-save situation, then he'll be back to his role as a closer."

Sasaki (1-1, 9.00 ERA) went on the DL April 23 with tightness in his back, a problem that developed during a win over Cleveland one night earlier. This week, he threw one inning for Seattle's affiliate in the Class A California League.

The Mariners sent right-hander Rafael Soriano back to Triple-A Tacoma. He threw two innings in a 7-2 loss Wednesday to the Yankees, allowing two hits and one run with one strikeout and one walk.

Toronto Blue Jays: The team announced Thursday that Expedite Plus, a Toronto-based delivery company, has purchased all remaining 200 level seats in the outfield and all 500 level tickets to four upcoming games at SkyDome and is offering them to fans for $2 each.

Victor J. Deschenes, the president and CEO of Expedite Plus, said his company has purchased more than 20,000 tickets for each of the four Wednesday games.

The discounted tickets are for the Blue Jays' home games May 14 against Tampa Bay, May 28 against the White Sox, June 11 against Pittsburgh and June 25 against Baltimore. They normally range in price from $7-21.

On April 28, Rogers Communications Inc., which owns the Blue Jays, purchased all remaining tickets -- more than 34,000 -- to the club's April 29 home game against Texas and offered them back to fans for $1 each. The promotion was intended to show Toronto was still a vibrant city despite an outbreak of SARS.

The game drew 48,097 fans -- the second-largest SkyDome crowd this season behind the 50,119 on Opening Day.
