Meyers originally hired to only work road games

Associated Press

ST. LOUIS -- Joel Meyers, hired this season to replace Joe Buck in the St. Louis Cardinals radio booth, will take on the job full-time following the death of Jack Buck, Joe's father and the team's longtime broadcaster.

Meyers was hired before the start of the season to broadcast road games, with Jack Buck scheduled to continue broadcasting the club's games at Busch Stadium.

The lead baseball and football announcer for Fox Sports, Joe Buck had planned to give up his place on the team's radio broadcast to focus on his television career and spend more time with his family.

But as his father's poor health prevented him from returning to radio, Joe Buck briefly stayed with the broadcasts. But as Joe Buck's responsibilities with Fox began to increase this month, Meyers was tapped to work the team's home radio broadcasts, as well.

Jack Buck, who started broadcasting Cardinals games in 1954, died last week at age 77 after a long illness. Suffering from heart trouble and the early stages of Parkinson's disease, Buck had stopped traveling with the Cardinals in the late 1990s.

Meyers and Mike Shannon, a 31-year veteran of the Cardinals' booth who works all of the team's games, will broadcast both home and away games for the rest of the season, officials told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Officials with the team's radio network said it is too soon to talk about a permanent replacement for Jack Buck, a sentiment echoed by Meyers.

Meyers, 47 and a St. Louis native, has called NFL, college basketball and Major League Baseball games for Westwood One and CBS Radio Sports since 1984. Meyers has also called San Antonio Spurs basketball of Fox Sports Net for the past three seasons.
