Padres organization among 1,500 mourners at funeral

Associated Press

CORONA, Calif. -- Almost the entire San Diego Padres organization, from players to bat boys to executives, joined 1,500 other mourners at outfielder Mike Darr's funeral Wednesday.

"Mike would be laughing if he saw how many of his friends have shirts and ties on," infielder Damian Jackson said in his eulogy.

Darr, 25, and Duane Johnson, 23, were killed early Friday morning when the SUV Darr was driving rolled over near the Padres' spring training complex in Peoria, Ariz.

Darr and Johnson weren't wearing seat belts and were ejected. Minor league pitcher Ben Howard, who was in the back seat, was wearing his seat belt and walked away with just scratches.

Police said alcohol played a role in the crash.

"Buckle up. That's a message that cries out loudly here," pastor Gerry Brown told the mourners during the 70-minute service at Crossroads Christian Church in Darr's hometown. "And don't drink and drive should be shouted forever."

The Padres flew on a charter flight from Phoenix to Ontario and were bused the 25 miles to the church. They were joined by Seattle catcher Ben Davis, who was traded from the Padres to the Mariners during the winter.

Nearly every Padres' front-office employee attended, as did former players Tony Gwynn, David Newhan, Carlos Reyes, Alex Arias and Jay Witasick. Former pitching coach Dave Stewart also attended.

Former teammate Matt Skrmetta was a pallbearer.

"Mike's energy and swagger were unbelievable," Jackson said. "How he could put you in a good mood is a memory you can't take away. This room isn't filled because Mike was a bad person."

Padres closer Trevor Hoffman broke down frequently in his 10-minute eulogy

Infielder Phil Nevin was so broken up after speaking that he had to leave the church to compose himself.

Family friend Nancy Walker read a statement from Darr's wife, Natalie.

It read in part: "I am forever grateful to the Padres' family for all their support and assistance. They have truly been our extended family. Thank you to all our friends and the special people in our lives for your thoughts and prayers.

"Most of all, I thank my husband, Michael Curtis Darr, for the loving years we shared together and our two beautiful sons, Michael Jr. and Matthew. I especially want to remember Mike for the good times and all the laughs we shared together with our boys.

"Your spirit and love will be in our hearts forever."

The 2001 season was Darr's first full season in the big leagues.
