BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox starter Frank Castillo strained a muscle on his right side and was forced to leave Thursday night's game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Castillo was injured on a 3-2 pitch to Brent Abernathy in the second inning. After he threw ball four, Castillo walked off the mound and began grabbing at the area underneath his arm.

Manager Jimy Williams visited the mound with trainer Jim Rowe and removed him. Castillo was replaced by Bryce Florie, who pitched in his first game since being hit in the face by a line drive last Sept. 8.

Castillo pitched 1 2-3 innings, allowing two runs, both on a home run by Ben Grieve.

Castillo's injury is more bad news for a starting pitching staff that lost ace Pedro Martinez when he was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.

Castillo is 7-5 with a 4.35 ERA after Thursday's outing.
