Loaiza obtained for two minor leaguers

Associated Press

TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays shook up their rotation on Wednesday, acquiring right-hander Esteban Loaiza from the Texas Rangers and sending struggling right-hander Chris Carpenter to the bullpen.

In exchange for Loaiza, the Blue Jays sent two minor leaguers to the Rangers.

Loaiza, 28, was 5-6 with a 5.37 ERA for the Rangers, appearing in 20 games, including 17 starts. He has a career record of 44-45 with one save in 160 appearances.

Loaiza began his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1995 before joining Texas in 1998. All nine of his wins last year came after the All-Star break.

"He can relieve and he can start, and he has experience down the stretch," Toronto general manager Gord Ash said. "We made this move without disrupting our 25-man roster, and with his versatility we can look for another starter or reliever."

Ash had been looking for pitching help. Young starters Carpenter, Roy Halladay and Kelvim Escobar have struggled this season.

Carpenter, projected to be Toronto's No. 2 starter, was shocked that he was sent to the bullpen. The move comes a day after Toronto manager Jim Fregosi criticized Carpenter for his lack of effort.

"I'm a starter. It's his decision. That's all I want to say," Carpenter said.

Carpenter, a 25-year-old right-hander, allowed seven runs in four-plus innings in Toronto's 11-7 loss to the New York Mets on Tuesday night. He is 7-9 with a 6.66 ERA.

Loaiza said he was happy to be a Blue Jay.

"I've played in cold weather, and I've played in warm weather. I know I'm going to be very comfortable in Toronto," said Loaiza, a native of Mexico whose wife has family in Toronto.

The Rangers got right-hander Darwin Cubillan and second baseman Mike Young. Neither were considered top prospects.

Cubillan has pitched for both Toronto and Triple-A Syracuse this season. The 25-year-old right-hander was 1-0 with a 9.69 ERA with Toronto. He had six saves and a 0.55 ERA with Syracuse.

Young, an All-Star second baseman for Double-A Tennessee, hit .275 with 24 doubles, six homers and 47 RBI.
