Friday, November 5 Griffey named Player of Decade at 1999 Players Choice Awards |

LAS VEGAS (Ticker) -- Ken Griffey Jr. tonight received the most prestigious honor from his peers, being named Player of the Decade at Major League Baseball's 1999 Players Choice Awards. Griffey, Barry Bonds of San Francisco and Atlanta's Greg Maddux were the three finalists for Player of the Decade. Griffey won after a sensational stint with Seattle as he belted 382 of his 398 career homers. Other award winners tonight included Pedro Martinez of Boston, who was the only multi-award winner as baseball's Player of the Year and American League Pitcher of the Year. Cleveland outfielder Manny Ramirez was named AL Player of the Year while third baseman Chipper Jones of Atlanta was honored in the National League. Houston's Mike Hampton won NL Pitcher of the Year honors. Center fielder Carlos Beltran of Kansas City was voted the top rookie in the AL, with Florida outfielder Preston Wilson taking honors in the NL. Comeback Player of the Year went to Oakland designated hitter John Jaha and Florida pitcher Alex Fernandez. The lone award recognizing a player's efforts on and off the field went to slugger Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs, who was named Man of the Year.
