TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) _ Scott Schoeneweis has no idea what went wrong. After giving up nine runs and 11 hits in 4 2-3 innings, though, obviously something did.

The Chicago White Sox tagged Schoeneweis the slow way Tuesday, hitting RBI singles and doubles one after another as they beat the Anaheim Angels 12-3.

``I felt great. I can't tell you why I gave up nine runs and 11 hits,'' Schoeneweis said. ``Not with the way I was throwing. I felt like I threw the ball better than I have any other time.

``I threw my pitches were I wanted to and they hit the ball on the ground every time.''

After getting the White Sox to go three-and-out in the first inning, Schoeneweis ran into trouble in the second. Magglio Ordonez led off with a single, the first of four in a row. Then Carlos Lee doubled and Jeff Abbott singled, and the White Sox suddenly were up 4-0.

The fifth inning was even worse. Josh Paul led off with a single, Ray Durham and Jose Valentin each hit RBI doubles and Greg Norton drove in another run with a single. Two batters later, Chris Singleton hit a two-run homer.

``It's just one of those days,'' said Singleton, who drove in three runs. ``There was nothing special guys were talking about on the bench that they were doing.''

When Schoeneweis left the game after Singleton's homer, every Chicago starter but Ordonez, Paul and Paul Konerko had driven in a run. His ERA jumped from 2.25, second best among Angels starters, to 6.48

``I know I'm going to give up hits. There are many holes and somebody's going to get them through,'' Schoeneweis said. ``I'm not trying to strike guys out. I'm just trying to get ground balls and hope to get double plays.

``I'm baffled, really.''

Notes: Angels SS Benji Gil hit his third homer of the season. Darin Erstad and Jason Bates drove in the other Anaheim runs. ... Frank Thomas sat out the game again with a slight strain of his left rib cage. Thomas was scratched from Saturday's lineup and hasn't played since. ``What I'd like to do is give him today and tomorrow off,'' manager Jerry Manuel said. ``We've played so many games we're a little ahead, so we can afford to give him the day off.'' ... White Sox RHP Kip Wells, who still has a nasty red, purple and blue bruise on his right arm from being hit by Mo Vaughn's line drive last Sunday, threw about 25 pitches Tuesday. His next start was pushed back from Friday to Sunday. ``I don't feel bad, I feel pretty good,'' Wells said. ``I feel like I could probably make the start if I had to, but there's really no reason to.''
