BOX SCORE
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ Gary Matthews Jr. hit a tiebreaking, two-run bloop double in the eighth inning Friday as the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 9-7. With the score tied at 7, Dusty Allen and Damian Jackson had consecutive two-out singles off loser Alan Embree and Matthews hit a high popup behind second base that should have ended the inning. Instead, it was lost in the sun by shortstop Wilson Delgado and second baseman Felipe Crespo. Matthews, who likely will begin the season at Triple-A Las Vegas, went 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs. San Diego fell behind 5-0 as starter Matt Clement has his first poor outing. Wiki Gonzalez, battling for a job as backup catcher, hit a three-run homer off Joe Nathan in a four-run fourth. Tony Gwynn went 2-for-3 to boost his average to .542 (13-for-24). Clement, the Padres' No. 3 starter, hadn't allowed a run in 10 previous spring innings. But the Giants reached him for five runs _ four earned _ and 10 hits in four innings. Clement struck out five and walked two. Matt Whiteside won despite allowing two runs and three hits in the eighth. San Francisco's Marvin Benard went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Damon Minor was 2-for-2 with RBI singles in the first and third innings. Nathan allowed four runs and five hits in four innings with four strikeouts.
