JUPITER, Fla. (AP) _ Carl Pavano allowed three hits in five innings and struck out five, leading the Montreal Expos over the Florida Marlins 4-1 Friday night.

Florida got its run in the fifth on a bloop RBI single by Ramon Castro. Felipe Lira, J.D. Smart and Scott Strickland combined to blank the Marlins on five hits the last four innings.

Montreal scored two runs in the third off Marlins starter Brad Penny, who had not allowed a run in his previous 11 innings this spring. Orlando Cabrera and Milton Bradley doubled, and Rondell White singled.

Antonio Alfonseca allowed a pair of runs in the eighth on Wilton Guerrero's triple, Manny Martinez's sacrifice fly and Mike Mordecai's RBI single.

Notes: The Expos sent LHP Ted Lilly to the New York Yankees as the first of two players to be named later in the Hideki Irabu trade. ... Montreal returned RHP Marty McLeary, selected in December's major league draft, to the Boston Red Sox, and optioned C Brian Schneider to Ottawa. ... Lee Stevens, acquired by the Expos from Texas on Thursday in a three-way swap of first basemen, arrived Friday but did not suit up. He's expected to be available Saturday. ... Pat Lennon hit two solo home runs in a ``B'' game against St. Louis. ... Graeme Lloyd, Ugueth Urbina and Steve Kline combined to hold the Cardinals to seven hits in six innings, including a homer by Mike Matheny, off Urbina. Andy Tracy also homered for Montreal.
