BOX SCORE
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) _ Being in different leagues, Jose Cruz Sr. doesn't get to attend many of his son's games. That's what made Wednesday special. ``Someday I hope he could play with a team that I'm coaching, but right now I just hope he has a good time and enjoys playing the game,'' the elder Cruz said after his son went 2-for-4 in the Toronto Blue Jays' 8-3 win over the Houston Astros. Cruz, a coach with the Astros, thinks his son has the potential to hit 35 home runs a year. Last year, Cruz Jr. homered for Toronto while his father watched during a spring training game against the Astros at Kissimmee. ``He sees a lot of what I don't see,'' Cruz Jr. said. ``He knows me the best and can watch me take a pitch and know right away how I am feeling.'' Raul Mondesi, Tony Batista, Homer Bush and Shannon Stewart homered for the Blue Jays . Mondesi and Batista connected off loser Shane Reynolds, who was working on a four-seam fastball, and Bush and Shannon Stewart homered off Wade Miller. Houston's Lance Berkman homered off John Frascatore. Toronto's Darren Fletcher, in his first game since knee surgery on Feb. 28, was his team's designated hitter and went 1-for-3, singling on his first pitch from Reynolds. Fletcher, who scored with ease from second on Chris Woodward's single, is scheduled to catch his first game on March 21. Toronto starter David Wells, 2-0 this spring, needed just 39 pitches to get through four innings and 30 were strikes. Wells allowed one run and five hits. ``He could have pitched seven innings today,'' Blue Jays manager Jim Fregosi said. Kelvim Escobar followed and struck out three in two scoreless innings, allowing one hit. Escobar has been slowed this by a slight tendinitis problem in his right shoulder that caused him to skip winter ball for the first time in his pro career. Roger Cedeno went 3-for-3 to lead the Astros. Notes: Toronto INF Craig Grebeck took grounders for the first time this spring. Grebeck has been recovering from a strained ribcage muscle. ... Blue Jays Alex Gonzalez could return to action as early as Thursday after missing six games with a slight right quad strain. ... Carlos Delgado is in a 1-for-20 slum with six strikeouts, including three Wednesday. ... Toronto C Andy Stewart announced his retirement Wednesday and has accepted the position of bullpen catcher for the Blue Jays. ... Toronto optioned RHP Matt Dewitt, LHP John Bale and 3B Casey Blake to Triple-A Syracuse. INF Felipe Lopez was re-assigned to the minor league camp.
