Book on CB Ken Lucas

Here's a rundown of what I've had to say about Mississippi CB KEN LUCAS since the beginning of the college-football season.

Jan. 4
Struggled in coverage against West Virginia, but his performance during the course of the regular season was at a consistently high level.

Dec. 31
I really like his combination of size (6 feet, 200 pounds), athletic prowess, and ball skills, but in order to secure a mid-first round grade, he'll have to prove he has the necessary recovery speed to get the job done when working in man situations against the likes of Randy Moss, Jimmy Smith, Torry Holt, and Marvin Harrison.

Dec. 7
Developed into a terrific cover man this season, intercepting five passes and breaking up 22 others. Lucas has ideal size as well as impressive recovery ability. He wasn't even a full-time starter on the corner until the latter stages of the '98 season when he made the permanent conversion from WR. Since he didn't begin the year with a high grade, it will be interesting to see how far teams elevate him up the board, especially if a few of the blue-chip junior corners are also in the mix.

Nov. 29
Remains at the top spot among senior cornerbacks. Against Mississippi State, Lucas finished with four tackles, one stop behind the line of scrimmage and also broke up a pass.

Nov. 22
In the Rebels' loss to Georgia, Lucas was rarely challenged, as the Bulldogs opted to throw away from his side of the field. Lucas recorded two tackles and came away with no pass breakups. Even so, his 22 PBUs on the year established a new school record.

Nov. 15
Came through with yet another quality effort in the Rebels 20-9 loss to LSU. After intercepting a pass, he now has five picks on the year. He also broke up two passes against the Bayou Bengals. For the year, he has broken up 22 passes.

Nov. 8
Ascent up the draft board continues for the athletically gifted former wide-out. Last week against Arkansas, Lucas again performed at an All-American level, breaking up two passes and nearly coming away with a pair of interceptions.

Nov. 1
The former WR has put together a brilliant final campaign with the Rebels. Through seven games, he's come away with four interceptions and also broken up 14 passes. This past week against UNLV, he picked off two passes, one of which was an extraordinary play in which Lucas demonstrated incredible athleticism.

Oct. 26
Returned to practice on Tuesday after being hampered by a groin injury he sustained against Alabama on Oct. 14. Athletically gifted, Lucas has evolved into a quality cover man during the latter stages of his college career. Through six games, he totaled 27 tackles, two stops behind the line and two interceptions; he leads the Rebels with 11 pass breakups.

Oct. 12
Last week, underrated senior CB Ken Lucas turned in a fine effort, limiting ASU's talented senior wide-out, Robert Kilow, to just five receptions for 37 yards. In 1999 Kilow accounted for 377 yards of total offense against the Rebels. This time, though, the man-to-man cover skills of Lucas spelled the difference.
