Book on RB LaDainian Tomlinson

Here's a rundown of what I've had to say about TCU RB LaDAINIAN TOMLINSON since the beginning of the college-football season.

March 21
I've had Tomlinson in the top 25 all year and even had him as high as No. 3 with the senior prospects. After a very productive career, followed by strong performances at the Senior Bowl practices, combine and individual workout, it's easy to see why he's viewed as a possibility for the Cleveland Browns, who own the third pick overall.

LaDainian Tomlinson
TCU RB LaDainian Tomlinson's showing at the Senior Bowl and NFL combine elevated his draft position.
Feb. 28
On the heels of a great senior year with the Horned Frogs, then an impressive showing early in the week at the Senior Bowl practices in Mobile, Tomlinson wowed the NFL brass with his superlative showing at the combine. He showcased home-run-hitting speed, caught the ball well and showed an exceptional approach during the interview sessions. With some clubs I spoke with, he's either caught or passed Deuce McAllister as the top RB on the draft board.

Feb. 7
Vision and decisiveness as a runner are definite attention-getters, plus he was able to show decent skills as a pass-receiving option at the Senior Bowl practices.

Jan.12
On the fringe of the Big Board, he caught the ball well and showed great burst and tremendous vision during Senior Bowl practices.

Jan. 4
He's strong, determined and more of a home-run hitter than some give him credit for. However, he's benefited from the option that is incorporated into the Horned Frogs' attack and will have to prove during individual testing that he can excel as a pass-receiving option.

Dec. 31
I really like his combination of strength and balance along with the instant ability to hit the home run. The primary concerns are his lack of experience catching the football as well as the fact that he benefited at TCU from the option attack that was employed. As far as his pass-receiving talent and potential, Tomlinson will have a chance to prove his worth during individual workouts.

Dec. 7
You can't argue with the production and he also combines strength with breakaway speed. The concern would be that RBs who have thrived in attacks that feature some option play tend to struggle some when they have to work out of a standard pro set. Examples include former Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam as well as former Northern Illinois product LeShon Johnson.

Nov. 29 Against SMU, the Horned Frogs and Tomlinson proved to be unstoppable, lighting up the scoreboard with 62 points. Tomlinson finished with 174 yards rushing on 26 carries, including a TD scamper of 74 yards.

Nov. 22
After falling behind 7-0 for the second straight week, the Horned Frogs regrouped quickly, rolling to an easy 47-14 victory over the Miners of UTEP. Tomlinson keyed the offensive explosion, carrying the ball 33 times for a season-high 305 yards and three TDs.

Nov. 15
The Horned Frogs can win the WAC on Saturday with a victory over the vastly improved Miners of UTEP. After that, they will be headed to the Mobile Alabama Bowl to face probably either Southern Mississippi or Louisville. Last week in their 24-7 win over Fresno State, Tomlinson rushed for 231 yards on 42 carries, scoring a TD.

Nov. 8
Solid production continues, with Tomlinson combining quickness and breakaway skills with the strength and balance to work his way through traffic. In the Horned Frogs' 27-24 loss to San Jose State, Tomlinson rushed for 155 yards on 32 carries and scored a pair of TDs. This week, TCU plays host to Fresno State before closing out the regular season against UTEP and SMU.

Nov. 1
Carried the ball 41 times for 200 yards against Rice last week, while scoring two TDs and catching one pass for seven yards.

Oct. 26
Was forced to maneuver on a sloppy track due to the nasty weather conditions at Tulsa last week. The rain never let up. Tomlinson finished with 119 yards on 27 carries while accounting for one TD on the ground. This week, the Horned Frogs return home to Amon G. Carter Stadium to face the Rice Owls.

Sept. 18
If TCU runs the table, as is possible, RB LaDainian Tomlinson has to be at or near the top of the list if he continues to run wild. Against Northwestern on Saturday, the dynamic 5-foot-10, 220-pounder carried the ball 39 times for 243 yards, scoring two TDs. That total would have been around 350 had it not been for a pair of TD runs (74 and 34 yards) being called back because of penalties. Don't be surprised if Tomlinson ends up being one of the top five players selected in the NFL draft this coming April.
