Walpole High (Mass.) football coach Chuck Grant resigned to take a position as an assistant women's hockey coach at Harvard University. Grant owns a 68-23 record and led Walpole to three Bay State Conference titles and two Super Bowl wins, in 1995 and 1997.

Dudley High (N.C.) nearly knocked off the No. 1 boys' basketball team in the country on Saturday night, but came up just short, 94-93, in double overtime to Oak Hill Academy (Va.). Steven Sanya missed a desperation shot at the buzzer that could have given Oak Hill just its second loss to a public high school in the past three seasons. Dudley 6-foot-6 junior Eric Hicks scored all 22 of his points after halftime and grabbed 13 boards. He also helped hold Oak Hill 7-footer DeSagana Diop to just six points. Dudley fell to 1-3, while Oak Hill, which was led by Rashaad Carruth's 27 points, improved to 4-0. ...

Louisville Male High (Ky.) won its third football state title in seven years with a 34-14 victory over Trinity High this past weekend. Receiver Montrell Jones led the Bulldogs with three touchdowns, including a 41-yard punt return for a score, and quarterback Brandon Blackerby threw for three TDs. Jones finished his career at Male with state marks in receptions (266) and TD receptions (59) and is second in career yardage (4,345). ...

The Maryville High (Tenn.) football team began the season with four straight losses, but ended it with a state title. The Rebels won the Class 4A title with a 33-14 win over Memphis East High on Saturday. T.J. Brock carried the ball 30 times for 183 yards and two touchdowns to lead Maryville.

Indianapolis Cathedral High (Ind.) freshman basketball players Robert Vaden and Desmond Gadis hadn't even played a game at the varsity level yet, but they both made oral commitments to attend Purdue University last week. Vaden is a 6-foot-5 forward who is projected to start for the varsity squad this year, while Gadis is a 6-foot guard who should see plenty of action for the varsity team. ...

Lincoln-Way High (Ill.) boys' soccer star Ned Grabavoy, a two-time high school All-American, orally committed to Indiana last Thursday. Grabavoy chose the Hoosiers over UConn, Virginia and UCLA. The 5-foot-7 forward/midfielder scored 43 goals as a senior and led the Knights to back-to-back second-place finishes at state.

High school basketball coach Bob Hendrickson retired three seasons ago, four wins shy of the 600 mark. He reached the milestone last Thursday night after coming out of retirement to coach the Phoenix Country Day (Ariz.) basketball team. Hendrickson's squad easily defeated Valley Lutheran High, 51-33. ...

The Coppell High (Texas) football team did too much celebrating after a late touchdown against Abilene Cooper High on Saturday night, and it cost the squad a chance to advance in the Class 5A playoffs. After Brian Bishop's touchdown reception with just over two minutes remaining cut Coppell's deficit to 28-27, the team was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct because of the celebration that ensued. The 15-yard penalty pushed the extra point back, and Coppell kicker Brent Ryon missed with a chance to tie the game. ...

The Columbine High (Colo.) football team claimed its second straight state title -- the first repeat since Cherry Creek High won three in a row from 1994-96 -- with a 41-7 rout of Bear Creek High on Saturday afternoon. It was the most lopsided victory in the big-school final since 1994, when Cherry Creek pounded Horizon High, 47-6.

Ventura High (Calif.) 5-foot-9, 165-pound running back Tyler Ebell has no peer when it comes to racking up rushing yards in a single season. The UCLA-bound Ebell gained 307 rushing yards and scored five touchdowns in a 34-21 Division IV semifinal win over Lompoc High on Saturday night. Ebell has amassed 4,206 yards this season, breaking the national mark of 4,087 yards set by former Frostproof High (Fla.) and current University of Tennessee running back Travis Henry in 1996. ...

The Kahuku High (Hawaii) football team ended St. Louis High's 18-game winning streak and string of 14 straight state championships. Kahuku defeated St. Louis, 26-20, to win the Chevron state title at Aloha Stadium on Friday night. Running backs Marcus Salanoa and Mulivai Pula each ran for two touchdowns in the win. ...

Scappoose High (Ore.) quarterback Derek Anderson finally got over the hump and made it to the state finals -- and he also showed the University of Oregon that it may have made a mistake in opting for his good friend, Burns High signal-caller Kellen Clemens. Anderson, who committed to Oregon State after Oregon chose to offer Clemens a scholarship, was 16-for-28 for 316 yards and three touchdowns in a 46-26 Class 3A state semifinal victory over Burns this past weekend. Clemens finished 28-for-51 for 346 yards, with two TDs and three interceptions. Anderson will try to lead Scappoose to its first state title against Pleasant Hill High this Saturday.
