National Hockey Top 10

1. Eden Prairie HS (Eden Prairie, Minn.) - (7-1-0)
The Eagles top the charts despite losing to Holy Angels, 1-0, Thursday. The nation's best team ripped Wayzata, 5-2, a few days earlier with the help of a one-goal, two-assist performance from Adam Armstrong.

2. Jefferson HS (Bloomington, Minn.) - (9-1-0)
Jefferson takes the second spot due to a head-to-head loss to Eden Prairie this season. However, Jefferson continued its dominance with a pair of victories. Matt Duncan knocked in a rebound with just 10 seconds remaining to lift his squad to a 2-1 win against Grand Rapids. Duncan chipped in with two assists and a goal in Jefferson's 4-2 victory over Hill-Murray in the Edina Holiday Classic.

3. Arlington HS (Arlington, Mass.) - (5-0-0)
Doing a former coach proud, Arlington won the opening game of the Ed Burns Holiday Hockey Classic Wednesday. Ed Burns coached Arlington for 50 seasons before retiring in 1997. Arlington nipped Reading, 4-3, to open the tournament. Pat Gannon and Brendan Timmins both scored third-period goals to break a 2-2 tie and send Arlington into the championship game against Arlington Catholic.

4. Catholic Memorial (West Roxbury, Mass.) - (4-1-1)
The powerhouse from Massachusetts ripped LaSalle, 8-2. Scott McDougall netted a hat trick from Memorial in the victory.

5. Detroit Catholic Central (Redford, Mich.) - (7-0-1)
Detroit Jesuit didn't prove to be much of a match for the fifth ranked team in the country. Catholic Central blasted Jesuit, 9-1, with Ryan Lasecki and Brett John both scoring hat tricks. John added two assists while Jared Ross assisted on three goals.

6. Mount St. Charles (Woonsocket, R.I.) - (7-0-0)
Considering Mount St. Charles has won 23 straight Rhode Island state hockey championships, it's a good idea that the squad faces opponents from out of state. It didn't matter this past week. Mount St. Charles hammered St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute (N.Y.), 9-2, in the Mount Holiday Face Off. Ryan Hatch did a tremendous job in the net after coming off the bench in a 2-2 contest. Nike Piccone scored three times while Corey Goglia also added a hat trick for the winners.

7. Greenway HS (Coleraine, Minn.) - (8-2-0)
Greenway wrapped up the Hibbing Invitational with a 6-2 rout of Brainerd. To get to the finals, Greenway dismissed Marshall, 5-1, with Joe Nielsen scoring two goals.

8. Fond du Lac HS (Fond du Lac, Wis.) - (6-0-1)
Fond du Lac doubled Stevens Point High, 4-2. But the squad wasn't as fortunate and had to settle for a 2-2 with Appleton to put the first blemish on the team's record.

9. Duluth East HS (Duluth, Minn.) - (7-3-0)
The Greyhounds may have three losses on their record but after a 5-2 win against Edina in the Edina Holiday Classic, East belongs in the Top 10. The real test will come in the finals of Edina Classic when East meets No. 2 Jefferson. Tommy Kolar scored twice while Dan Hoehne recorded 42 saves in the victory against Edina.

10. University School (Milwaukee, Wis.) - (5-1-0)
Minnesota and Massachusetts normally dominate a high school hockey conversation but the University School added Wisconsin to that list as well. The U School tripped up highly regarded Grosse Point North, 3-2, in four overtime sessions at the Joe Raymond Memorial Classic last Wednesday. Brandon Hays netted the game-winner after five minutes and one second had elapsed in the fourth extra period. Matt Bruemmer found the back of the net for the U School's first two scores.
