AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Tiger Woods' first stop on his road to a fourth straight major championship took a detour into the trees Thursday at The Masters.
Tiger Woods had eight birdies and two bogeys to match the low round of the day. |
Round one at a glance | |
Leading: Chris DiMarco, who has won once on the PGA Tour but is playing in his first Masters. DiMarco shot a 65 in his first official round on Augusta National. Following: Steve Stricker and Angel Cabrera both shot 66. Phil Mickelson, Lee Janzen and John Huston were another stroke back at 67. Easy day: Augusta National, softened by rain in the days before play began, allowed 33 players to break par. Not that easy: Even with the low scores, the field of 93 was still a cumulative 104-over par. That was inflated by an 87 from 69-year-old Billy Casper and scores in the 80s from Ben Crenshaw, Tommy Aaron, Gay Brewer and Arnold Palmer. Tiger watch: Tiger Woods is five shots back after a 2-under 70 that included only one birdie on the four par-5s. Nice pairing: Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer drew large galleries. Nicklaus and Player shot 73s, while Palmer had an 82 that included a 9 on the 13th hole. Older generation: Byron Nelson hit his last ceremonial tee shot to open The Masters at the age of 89. Former champion Doug Ford played only one hole before retiring in his record 49th Masters. Quoteworthy: "There are probably 500 DiMarcos who could come out and shoot 7-under on the first day. You don't know the pressure of the golf course when you first come out here." -- Greg Norman. |
“ | I shouldn't say it wasn't a tough day, but it was the easiest I've seen since I've been here. ” | |
