Five questions for Rob Johnson

Buffalo Bills quarterback Rob Johnson answered five questions from ESPN NFL reporter Chris Mortensen on Sept. 10:

Mort:Two games, two wins, and a lot of people in the NFL are impressed with you. At the same time, you took another pretty fair beating for the second straight week against the Packers. Are you concerned?

Johnson: Yeah. I don't think I can take this for 16 games. I'm taking some good hits. We just got through watching film and the problem we have is that we're so young on offense. We're missing a lot of A-gap blitzes, safety blitzes, hot reads, sight adjustments. I think as the season goes on, we'll pick that stuff up. The problem is that when you show your opponent on film that you can't pick something up, you're going to get the same treatment, so I'm sure we'll work pretty hard on that this week.

Mort: Then there's the competitor in you that causes some of your own problems. There's got to be a fine line between recklessly competing and competing smart. Is that difficult for you?

Johnson: It's tough. I don't like giving up on plays. Sometimes you just get caught up in situations you can't control, like screen passes where the rules don't allow you to throw the ball away. Then you get third-and-two and you don't want to scramble and slide short of the first down. So, it's a fine line.

Mort: I mean, now that you've finally established yourself as a starter in this league, you don't want to lose that because of injury, right?

Johnson: Yeah, I've had a lot of time off for a variety of things and right now I'm just having a lot of fun. I appreciate playing more than I did before. I don't take anything for granted. Never again. But you still have to play the game.

Mort: Sort of like Brett Favre, huh? You got to see him up close Sunday. Is he a guy you admire?

Johnson: Oh, yeah, and he's been beat up the past couple of years so I sort of know what he's been through. He's a heck of a competitor. He looks like he's always having fun. That's the way to play this game, I think.

Mort: Who annoys you more, Doug Flutie, or reporters asking about Doug Flutie?

Johnson: Uh. . .reporters asking about Doug Flutie.

Mort:Right answer.

Johnson: Yeah, good (laughs).
