Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre spoke to ESPN NFL reporter Chris Mortensen as he prepared to play the Chicago Bears on Sunday:
| |
Brett Favre is confident he can still lead the Packers back to the Super Bowl. |
Mort: (Arizona defensive coordinator) Dave McGinnis told me that the Brett
Favre who played the Cardinals last Sunday is the Brett Favre who was a
three-time MVP. Is he on to something?
Favre: I don't know what other people see. I was asked the question after the
game, 'Are you back?' Hell, I didn't go anywhere. Each week I've felt better,
and mentally, I've always felt fine.
Mort: And nobody was talking about your sore arm, or sore thumb, were they?
That must be refreshing.
Favre: Injuries obviously change the way you approach the game. I know last
year -- I even hesitate to tell people this now -- when the ball was leaving
my hand, I knew exactly where it was supposed to go, but when it got there,
it wasn't where it was supposed to be. That game the other day (vs. Arizona),
I threw some balls I haven't thrown in a year and, half of them, haven't even
attempted to throw in a year. I threw one ball 65 yards. I think a lot of
people saw that and went, 'Whoa.'
Mort: Boy, I haven't heard you sound this upbeat in a long time. Was there a
point recently when you maybe felt something good was about to happen?
Favre: Last week was the best week of practice I had in two years. I had one
practice where I probably threw four bullets in a row. I bounced one off
Free's (Antonio Freeman) chest. Donald Driver, I just about killed him.
A couple of guys started saying, '`Whoa, he's back.' I am a little reluctant to get
excited about it. I've seen a lot of people jump on and off my bandwagon. At
the same time, I am excited about our team. I feel like, with the progress
we've made, we're capable of doing some things. Same goes for me; physically
I'm starting to get it back together. I'm feeling sharp, mentally and
physically.
Mort: While you've been in this slump, whatever you want to call it, the talk
about the best quarterback in the NFL has shifted to Kurt Warner and Peyton
Manning. Does that bother you?

the Super Bowl every week I step onto the field. ” |

Favre: I think they should be getting a lot of attention. Obviously, what
Kurt Warner has done is amazing. What his team has done is amazing. There's a
lot of great talent there, and the Rams were probably overdue. For Kurt, he's
waited a long time for this. Who doesn't wait for that opportunity? I really
commend him. Peyton, ever since he was born, he's gotten a lot of attention.
But the thing about it, he's deserving of it. He's done so well. He's handled
himself great. I don't worry about it. I've had my day in the sun.
Mort: Wait it a minute, now it sounds like you're packing it in.
Favre: By no means. Look at Troy Aikman, or Steve Young until he retired,
those guys have gone through the same thing where some young guns come along
-- I guess I was one of them. I am younger than they are, and I
still feel like my best days are ahead of me. I accomplished so many things,
so early in my career. Actually, it's kind of funny. Everyone says, 'You're
one of the old guys now,' when they compare to me to Peyton, (Mark) Brunell and the
other quarterbacks in my division. OK, that happens to all of us at some
point.
Mort: I know you; you're not conceding to these young guys. What are you
going to do about it?
Favre: Hmmm, what am I going to do about it? I'll do what I do best. I'm not
going to worry. I feel great, and I still feel like I can take us to the Super
Bowl every week I step onto the field. I know the coaches and the front office
feel the same way. If they didn't feel that way, they'd make a change. I
feel like they know I earn every penny I make. (General manager) Ron Wolf will say, 'This is one dollar that is well spent.' I feel great. I'm excited
about our progress as a team. But whether we go 14-2, or 2-14, all I know is
that I'll go out and play the best I can every week and see where it takes us.
