Donahoe calls Texans' hiring of Capers 'wrong'

Tom Donahoe, the Buffalo Bills' president and general manager, complained to the NFL that the Houston Texans should not have been allowed to hire Dom Capers as their head coach Sunday because they do not begin playing until 2002.
"I just think there's a tremendous problem with the ethics of allowing this to happen," said Donohoe. "I could see it if all 31 teams who will be playing in September already had a head coach in place, but that's not the case."
Capers was one of four assistant coaches Donohoe wanted to interview for the Bills' head coaching vacancy. Capers pulled out when the Texans offered him their job after the expansion franchise recently announced they would not hire a coach until after the 2001 season.
"Dom didn't want to go through with the interview because I told him I was going to wait until after the Super Bowl to interview the other candidates (Ravens defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis and Giants defensive coordinator John Fox)," Donohoe said. "But he was a legitimate candidate, and now he's off the market for a team that doesn't play for two more years. It's wrong."
Donahoe has already interviewed Bills defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, who has agreed in principle to coach the New York Jets' defense.
