CHICAGO -- Floyd "Jumbo'' Cummings, who fought former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier to a 10-round draw in 1981, was sentenced to life in prison for armed robbery under the state's "three strikes'' law.
The 52-year-old Cummings' punishment was handed down Friday by Cook County Judge Joseph Kazmierski Jr.
Cummings was convicted in June of stealing $250 and a videocassette recorder from a fast-food restaurant in 2000. It was the third felony conviction for Cummings, who began boxing while serving a 13-year sentence for murder.
Cummings' most famous fight was against Frazier at the old Chicago International Amphitheatre and thwarted Frazier's comeback attempt. The bout is ranked by Boxing Times magazine as one of the 20 most controversial draws in boxing history.
Cummings' boxing career ended three years later, when he and another person were convicted of armed robbery and kidnapping in Michigan. |
