MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A man in Memphis for the Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson fight was fatally shot during an attempted robbery outside a topless nightclub early Sunday, police said. Officers said 28-year-old Lesley Hall of Newport, Ark., died after he was shot across the street from the club. Police Lt. Walter Norris said Hall went earlier in the evening to the Beale Street entertainment district with his cousin and uncle. The men then went to the club when downtown became crowded. "The three men left the club to go get something to eat and were headed across the street to where their car was parked when a man approached them with a gun," Norris said. Police said Hall died at the scene and the suspect fled on foot. In another shooting, a man was wounded Sunday morning at a nightclub where rapper Jay-Z was the host of an after-fight party. Police said Elliot Buckner was shot in the face by another man. No arrests have been made. Police reports said Buckner and a male suspect were dancing in the club when a crowd of people got into an argument and began to push and shove. The suspect pulled a gun and shot Buckner, who was listed in critical condition Sunday night at Regional Medical Center. Security guards were inside and outside the two-story club and metal detectors were used at its entrances. Rapper LL Cool J arrived at the party after the shooting. Meanwhile, police said three men were arrested on charges of selling forged tickets to the fight and two dozen people were charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct. All the arrests came downtown or in the Beale Street district. Lewis won the fight at The Pyramid with a knockout in the eighth round. |
