Tokuyama upsets Cho in decision

Associated Press

OSAKA, Japan -- Masamori Tokuyama won the World Boxing Council super flyweight title Sunday with a 12-round unanimous decision over defending champion Cho In-joo.

Tokuyama, whose real name is Hong Chang Soo, attacked Cho from the start and knocked him down once in the fourth round before 3,000 spectators at the Osaka Municipal Gymnasium in western Japan.

Cho was making the sixth defense of the title he won from Gerry Penalosa on Aug. 29, 1998.

American judges Lou Filippo scored it 119-107, Henry Elespuru 117-109 and Dalby Shirley 116-110, all for Tokuyama.

Tokuyama, WBC super flyweight No. 6 contender and Orient-Pacific Federation super flyweight champion, landed a series of speedy and accurate left jabs and right straights.

In the fourth round, Tokuyama knocked down Cho by landing a right against his face.

"I got nervous a little in the beginning, but I could fight well," said Tokuyama.

Cho said after the fight, "I was in good condition, but Tokuyama's right punches were stronger than I expected. I am not retiring from the ring because of losing this fight."

Tokuyama has a record of 22-2-1, with five knockouts. It was Cho's his first loss after 18 victories.

Tokuyama weighed 114.4 pounds, Cho 114.6.
