Matchmaker Teddy Brenner dies at 82

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Teddy Brenner, one of boxing's top matchmakers first for Madison Square Garden and then for Top Rank Inc., died at age 82.

Brenner died of Parkinson's disease at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital on Friday, according to his wife, Judy.

While working at Madison Square Garden from 1957-78, Brenner was instrumental in the development of Joe Frazier. In 1971, he arranged the first of three heavyweight championship fights between Frazier and Muhammad Ali.

He also made fights for Roberto Duran, Wilfred Benitez and Alexis Arguello, turning them into high-profile boxers.

Brenner joined Top Rank in 1980 and arranged the Duran-Davey Moore fight which sold out the Garden.

Born in Brooklyn, Brenner served with the Navy in the Pacific during World War II, and moved into boxing after the war, working as a matchmaker in New Brunswick, N.J., and in New York's Eastern Parkway and St. Nicolas arenas before moving to Madison Square Garden.

"Teddy Brenner was a great person and a fantastic boxing person," promoter Bob Arum, president of Top Rank, said. "There will never be another matchmaker equal to Teddy Brenner."

In addition to his wife, Brenner is survived by a son and a daughter.

A funeral was scheduled Sunday at Riverside Chapel in New York.
