Holyfield's pastor refuses to reveal contributions

Associated Press

ATLANTA -- A controversial minister faces contempt charges for refusing to tell a divorce lawyer how much money former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield gave to his church.

Creflo A. Dollar leads World Changers Ministries in College Park and teaches the "prosperity gospel," which holds that God promises wealth and health to the faithful.

Dollar is refusing to tell John Mayoue, the divorce lawyer for Janice Holyfield, how much money the boxer gave to the church. Mayoue said the figure is about $7 million.

"We believe that Mr. Holyfield and Pastor Dollar have a financial arrangement that is very suspicious," Mayoue said during a hearing Wednesday.

Dollar already has come under suspicion for presenting $1,000 checks to 100 Fulton County police officers last month. The state Ethics Board is investigating that $100,000 gift.

Dollar's lawyer, Lecora Bowen, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that forcing the pastor to give evidence in a divorce hearing would destroy the relationship of trust between pastors and parishioners.

"What people need to focus on are the bigger issues in this case, the separation of church and state," Bowen said.

In September, Judge Ben Miller ordered Dollar to provide financial information. Dollar appealed to the Georgia Court of Appeals, but Mayoue says the appeal was filed improperly.

Miller will hear arguments on Mayoue's contempt motion on Dec. 16.

Mayoue said other witnesses, such as Holyfield's first wife, Paulette, are not cooperating either. Holyfield's lawyers have said they don't care if Dollar testifies.
