SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -- Jeff Green survived 13 caution flags and a three-lap dash to the finish to win the NASCAR Busch Series Textilease/Medique 300 at South Boston Speedway and extend his series points lead.
Green took the lead from runner-up Tony Raines on lap 171 and
led the final 129 circuits Saturday to win his second race of the
season by about three car lengths.
"We were lucky enough to have track position and stay up
front," said Green, who won for the sixth time in 162 career Busch
Series starts. "I knew we had a good enough car to win this thing.
You just have to stay out of trouble to do it."
The race's final caution on lap 294 set up a three-lap race to
the finish between the Chevrolets of Green and Raines, who led 123
of the first 169 laps. Raines made a charge at Green coming to the
white flag, but faded as Green pulled away to win.
The official margin of victory was .381 seconds.
Elton Sawyer finished third in a Ford, followed by rookie Ron
Hornaday in a Chevrolet. Rich Bickle rounded out the top-five in a
Pontiac.
The race was slowed 13 times by caution for a total of 98 laps.
Green averaged 55.577 mph in a race that took 2 hours, 9
minutes, 33 seconds to complete. There were only three lead changes
among three drivers.
Green's victory enabled him to extend his Busch Series points
lead to 264 over Todd Bodine after 15 events. Bodine finished 36th,
104 laps behind the leaders.
