Dixon to start for Coop, Ferdinand added to roster

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Houston Comets forward Tina Thompson will not play in Saturday's WNBA All-Star game after spraining her left ankle in practice this week.

Thompson, selected by fans as a starter for the West, was injured in the closing minutes of a Comets' workout Monday. She'll be out seven-to-10 days. San Antonio's Marie Ferdinand was selected Wednesday as her replacement on the roster.

Thompson ranks fifth in the league in scoring, averaging 18 points, and started in the four previous All-Star games. Ferdinand is averaging 14.8 points.

Thompson joins Comets teammate Cynthia Cooper on the sidelines. Cooper also was selected to start but is out for the season with a torn rotator cuff.

Los Angeles Sparks guard Tamecka Dixon will replace Cooper in the starting lineup. Michael Cooper, coach of the West and the Sparks, made the announcement Wednesday.

Dixon ranks second on the Sparks in scoring, averaging 14.4 points.

"When she's healthy this is what you can expect from Tamecka,'' Michael Cooper said. "She's been one of the key players to our success this year.''

Michael Cooper has not yet selected Thompson's replacement in the starting lineup.
