Comets star has surgery on torn rotator cuff

Associated Press

HOUSTON -- Three-time WNBA scoring champion Cynthia Cooper underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn rotator cuff on her right shoulder.

Cooper, who came out of a one-year retirement to play for the Houston Comets this season, is out for the year.

"We expect a full recovery," team physician Bruce Moseley said.

Cooper, the oldest player in the WNBA at 40, played in only four games this season. She averaged 16 points, 2.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists.

She injured the shoulder during practice June 2.

"I would have done anything to play, but after talking with the doctors and our trainer, it was clear that my only real option was to have corrective surgery," Cooper said Thursday. "It was a tough decision, but I will be back next year."

Last season, Cooper coached Phoenix to a 10-6 record before leaving the team to spend more time with her family.
