Starbird to suit up for Starzz

Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Starzz lost two guards in Wednesday's WNBA expansion draft, including Debbie Black, but picked up another in a subsequent trade.

After losing Black, the Starzz traded 6-4 forward Elena Baranova and their second-round pick in the 2000 draft to Miami for 6-1 guard Kate Starbird and a first-round selection in the 2000 draft.

Starbird was the 1996-97 college player of the year at Stanford.

The expansion draft required each of the WNBA's teams to leave two players unprotected so the four incoming organizations could stock up, and the Miami club took the 5-foot-2 Black.

Starzz coach Fred Williams said he's disappointed to lose Black, who started all 32 of Utah's games last season.

"We'll miss Debbie and we wish her the best," Williams said. "I'm confident she understands these things. She's going to an organization where she'll be able to play and help them out."

The Starzz also lost 5-6 Chantel Tremitere to Indiana.
