NEW YORK -- Rebecca Lobo, the New York Liberty star who missed nearly all of the 1999 season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee, had surgery Wednesday after reinjuring the knee Sunday.

Rebecca Lobo suffered the originial injury just 42 seconds into New York's 1999 season opener.

Lobo had the surgery at Beth Israel Hospital North Division to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament. Her first surgery to repair the ligament was July 1.

"The injury was not precipitated by a muscular weakness and we anticipate a complete recovery, " Knicks team physician Dr. Norman Scott, who performed the surgery, said in a statement on WNBA.com. "Rebecca was a exemplary patient during her rehabilitation and we have full confidence that she will exhibit the same dedication to returning to the court following this setback."

Lobo was injured during a rehabilitation session while playing in a controlled situation.

"Obviously, we are devastated," Liberty general manager Carol Blazejowski said. "Since her surgery on July 1, Rebecca has committed herself to getting back on the court. While this certainly is a setback, I'm confident that Rebecca will work even harder to come back from this stronger and even more competitive than ever."

Lobo's original injury was sustained on June 11, just 42 seconds into New York's season-opening 87-60 win over Cleveland. During the league's inaugural season, Lobo was a second team All-WNBA pick.
