Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, who threatened to boycott Wimbledon because he had not been seeded, has withdrawn because of a lower back injury.
Ferrero's place in the draw was taken by lucky loser Wayne Black of Zimbabwe. Black plays world No. 13 Ferrero's original opponent Karol Kucera of Slovakia on Monday.
Ferrero and compatriots Albert Costa and Alex Corretja, all clay court specialists, had written to the ATP Tour complaining that the All England Club had ignored their world rankings and excluded them from the Wimbledon seedings.
"We have decided to send a letter to the ATP to let them know that we disagree with the way they are acting at Wimbledon," Corretja said. "The ATP requires us to play in Wimbledon but it does not oblige Wimbledon to respect the ATP rankings."
The three asked for a new draw and threatened to pull out of the championships.
The other three Grand Slam events -- the Australian Open, French Open and U.S. Open -- set their seedings almost exactly according to world rankings. Wimbledon officials traditionally stray from rankings and often base seedings on past performances on the All England Club grass.
World No. 15 Costa is scheduled to play 11th-seeded Dutchman Richard Krajicek and world No. 11 Corretja faces fellow Spaniard Alberto Martin.
"There has been a lot of nonsense that we don't understand, and we ask for a new draw," Corretja said. "Otherwise we think we will not play." |
