McEnroe gets best of Borg

LONDON -- John McEnroe, who seldom followed Wimbledon etiquette when he won three titles at the All England Club, explained how he got onto the grounds of Buckingham Palace for a charity match Sunday against Bjorn Borg.

John McEnroe beat longtime rival Bjorn Borg 6-3, 7-6 (5).
"The side gate," he said, jokingly.

McEnroe, 41, and Borg, 44, relived their 1980 and '81 Wimbledon finals on the palace tennis court before about 750 guests, including former Formula One driver Damon Hill, ex-Wimbledon champion Pat Cash and Art Garfunkel.

Borg won five straight Wimbledon titles before his string ended in 1981 with a loss to McEnroe. Now, they often face each other in ATP senior events, but Sunday was special as McEnroe won 6-3, 7-6 (5).

As usual, McEnroe kept the crowd loose. Prince Andrew, who arranged the event, was in the stands laughing.

"This is a unique event," said Prince Andrew, who hoped to raise about $1 million for a children's charity. "It will never be repeated."

After slipping once on the court, McEnroe shouted: "You'll hear from my lawyer." After missing an easy overhand smash, he paused theatrically at the net to measure the height.

"Every time we play, they talk about the match in '80 and bring that back, unfortunately," McEnroe said. "We have to live up to that, which isn't easy. The older we get the better we used to be."
